Texas and California are huge states compared to all of the Northeastern ones.

Florida is pretty big in size too and has the 4th highest population, yet it just got lumped in with Southeast.

Also aren't the regional forums used to organize rides too. I really don't think someone from western PA is going to meet with riders in NJ or someone from NJ with riders in Northern Maine, etc.

NY is a big state with a large population, and it does come third, but CA and TX are first 'n' second, in both population and area (if you exclude Alaska). You do have a point about it being inconvenient though for someone from say Hamilton, New Jersey to meet up with someone from Caribou, Maine, but a lot of northeastern states don't have a big population, like Maine or Rhode Island or Vermont. Alaska and Hawaii are so far, far away from Oregon, Washington, and Idaho, that if they both didn't have small populations I'd be surprised they didn't have forums unto themselves. No one from Nome or Honolulu would have an easy time meeting up with someone in Boise.

Maybe the Northeast forum could be split into the Mid-Atlantic (delaware, maryland, and pennsylvania), Tri-State (new york, new jersey, and connecticut) and the rest of New England (everywhere else).

That's my point. I'm not saying every state should have it's own forum, but it should be split up a lot more than it currently is.

If specific states don't get their own forums we could always start off thread titles with some kind of identifier like (NJ) or (PA), (ME), etc.

Mid-Atlantic's been asking for it's own forum for over a year. Still hasn't happened.
Need to fix the Virginia/Maryland split.

Do the threads in Northeast really get to the point that something posted yesterday gets shuffled down to a second page because of all the threads? The last post on the first page right now is from December 16th, and while it's the winter with less traffic that doesn't pick up all that much. Personally I like reading about things happening in Philly and DC too and wouldn't if it was separated out.

What would change if it was its own section? If something happens in DC put 'DC' in the title. Same with NYC, Philly, or any other area. If the entire front page has threads relating to DC because of the traffic that be a stronger reason to split it up than anything else; otherwise we'll probably be left with two fairly dead forums with four or five active threads split between them instead of one slow forum with four or five active threads.

Raise awareness about this and with enough support it will happen.

That's exactly right. If you look at the Texas forum, their last post (just one state) is from about the same time as the last post on this forum. Northern California's is about 2 weeks out, and Southern California's is about 4 days out. When we're not slower from the holidays, SoCal averages about a page of thread activity daily.

Excellent suggestion. That's what we often do in the PNW regional. I also think you've made an accurate prediction of what would happen if we split up this forum with the traffic it currently has. We can revisit this subject when you've got more posting going on.

The regional areas are less about community and more about community while riding. So if less people are riding --> less discussion. Foo picks up though :)

The "Where are the MD people's?" thread has spontaneously evolved into the de facto "forum" for Maryland riders.

I, too, like to occasionally read threads from riders in nearby areas, and it is easier in some ways to do that in one forum. Maybe each Northeast state or region that wants its own little world :) can just have a thread similar to the "MD people's", and maybe they could be sticky, so always at the top.

I guess I just become a bigger old fart every year, when it comes to the cold.

Just 2 years ago I was riding at least 3-4 days all winter long, except for about a 2 week stretch after a pretty big storm, which made it impossible to ride. And even then I at least attempted a few rides, and only bailed after a few nice wipe outs.

I also have a nice dry suit and a pair of dry gloves, but the last thing on my mind right now is diving, unless it's someplace with palm trees.

I really need to just move South.
