Southern California - Sat Jan 26th - B2B 2008 - SGRT

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
1/24/08 - Due to weather and the poor condition of the path this ride is cancelled:(

Gina's been out of it for a month or so, so I may go stag depending on how she feels. 72 may be out of her range right now. Unless it rains, I should be there!:D

tentatively, im in for the full century. Is it just going to be an out and back on the bike path, or are we going to come back a different way?

I will be doing the 72 out and back on SGRT...there is usually a group that starts at the Rose Bowl and makes it a full century...but the basic ride is an out and back...

Put me down. What route do they take from the Rose Bowl and what time? I might ride from my house and hook on with them somewhere along the way.

Don't know if I'll do the whole 72 miles, but will definitely be there. I may hitch a ride back from the beach, depending on how my back holds up. If anyone else wants, I have room in my truck if I do end up taking a short one.

From the rose bowl, we could drop down to the montrose ride start and take Huntington, then drop down on to duarte road, and take that to the park.

Why you asking me? I don't know. I'm just heading east until I get to Encanto. :p Hey, by the way, I've met Merck in his young pup glory. He'll be dropping me like a badly microwaved potato in two minutes flat. So, I don't know what route HE'LL be taking, but I'll work something out. :D

Im going to be taking it easy that day. Ive got 3 25 minute zone 4 intervals planed for the day before. My legs will be toast, thats why i said tentatively.

Speaking of dropping, I assume this isn't a hammerfest, is it? I'm not sure what my legs can do yet. My back injury is crazy. Some days I can hammer like anyone else, other days I feel 20 years older than I am. :(

Never a hammerfest (at least not planned).... but it usually it breaks into a couple of groups....so there are usually all type of riders...fast and intermediate...
We regroup at 4 Corners (approx 15 miles - right before the whittier dam) then a rest stop at Liberty Park (approx 26 miles) then on to Seal Beach....
Going down tends to be faster, it is somewhat downhill after all...coming back the pace tends to slow a bit...
I know the feeling....been having some backs issue the last few months myself...but they tend to show up when I am climbing...usually the flatter type rides like this its ok...
But I guess I have to say this is not a no drop ride...but we havent lost anyone yet...a few almosts...
But with the regroup and rest stop, everyone should be able to catch up..
I'm in for the loop down through Long Beach on the Lario if anyone wants to join.

Thanks. I have the same problem right now climbing. Thats why I'm not riding in SM next weekend. Might drop by anyway. I have to say though, getting back into shape (I stopped riding after the Rosarito ride in Sept) has really helped with the back. I should be back in form soon.

 That is so sweet, Brian. :o No, you wouldn't want me. I'm a PITA in more ways than one.
There's a reason I'm single.
And a reason I like it that way. :D

Yippee!!! :D Oh, come on, Scoot. This time, I'm going to work out a better route than Foothill back. John doesn't remember, but he did give me side streets that you, the guys and I took a couple of weeks ago. It may not be the most direct route, but we'll avoid all those damn lights!

Haha, didn't realize I was expected to bring the boombox for that one.
hmmm... climbing Latigo with a boombox strapped to the bike? Six months ago, maybe. The shape I'm in now? I'd be challenged to ride up with an after dinner mint on the bike - even if it is only "wafer-thin."

Sandbag alert.....
I might be in for this one, or at least part of it, but it will depend on when I can get out of work that morning. If I do make it I will be starting @ Encanto Park and may or may not be returning with you guys depending on what the wife wants to do with the opprotunity of the beach.
Mark me as a definate maybe. lol

Strange think Herbie! Everytime you organize a B2B ride, it happens to be on one of our grandkids' birthday! This is the second time!:D
I'll be there. My daughter knows better than to schedule a party early on a ride day!
6 grandkids so that means 4 more B2B rides within the the one year period!:p

Make sure to denote that I'm hopping on somewhere BETWEEN the Rose Bowl and Encanto (if they ever post an intended route) so people don't wait for me at the Rose Bowl.

No, I'm not posting an intended route. The ride is the beach ride that Herb is planning. If you wish to do the century route, please start at the Rose Bowl with the small group that's forming. Otherwise, I'm not worrying about folks trying to catch up with us somewhere in between the Rose Bowl and Encanto Park. If this were my ride that I was planning (a century from RB to Seal Beach and back), I'd take the time and trouble to create a route slip. But it's not.
Love and kisses. :D

OK, then just put me down for Encanto Park and I'll plan a route there. I might be able to do a century, but 108 miles probably not :D
I just don't want anyone going "Wait, don't leave yet, Urbanknight's not here!" Not that I expect anyone to ever wait for me (if I'm not on time, it's my own damn fault) but there always seems to be someone who wants to wait a half hour just in case.

So, I'm incredibly interested in joining you guys on this ride, but first I have a noob question:
How fast do ya'll go?
Now, I know, some of you may be rolling your eyes, saying things like, "If you have to ask, then you're not fast enough," or "You'll know you can do it when you do it," or some other Zen/Yoda "Do or do not, there is no try" mantra, but I'm for real here.
See, I've been riding my bike for a pretty solid five months, with my usual rides being 14-20 miles, and my weekend rides being around 40 miles, but I've been doing these all (save for a couple) by myself. I have one friend who goes about my speed, and another who struggles at my speed, but then there are other people on the San Bernardino part of the SART that fly by like I'm standing still.
I really have no group experience or much else to compare myself to, and if I'm going to be aiming for 72 miles in a part of LA that I'm unfamiliar with, (even though I'll be packing my cell phone) I'd like to at least be somewhat reassured by the fact that I won't be dropped at mile 2 and be hitting the end long after everyone else has showered, eaten, and is in bed.
In other words, I'm skeeeered!!! :)
So, how fast do you think you'll be riding on this ride? I'm good for 40 miles at 17 mph, slight headwind, on the flats.
Anyone care to reassure my panicked soul? :p
Thanks.
