I can't decide whether I should get the I-Magic system or the E-motion, free motion rollers for my winter training. I live in ND so depending on the year I could end up using it from Oct. thru Apr. so I want something that will keep me interested.

I figure the pros of the I-Magic system are the ability to record my progress and riding against other people over the Internet sounds fun.

The pros of the E-motion system would be the realism of riding on it.

So, if you had the money to burn which would you pick and why?

Thanks!

I've never tried the E-Motion rollers but they look v cool. I don't own the iMagic, but do own the Fortius. Before you buy I would STRONGLY urge you to go to the TACX website, specifically the Support Section, and read user feedback on their forums. You will be the wiser for it.

I had high hopes for the Fortius upon initial purchase. Sadly, the product has not worked as advertised. While I have learned to live w its shortcomings (because the RLVs make indoor training somewhat painless), I do think about selling it from time to time.

After reading the TACX forums you will at the least be making an informed choice. If I could do it all over again I would have purchased a Computrainer or just saved the $s instead.

Read this one thread as it speaks volumes about the quality of TACX's offering.

I REALLY hate to be the voice of negativity in regards to TACX's offeirng, and again I do not own the i-Magic, but they have earned much of the ill will that is now directed at them.

Have you checked out these guys? They seem to get the best "press' on various bike and power forums for the quality of the ride feel they provide. Their lateral motion trainer looks interesting.

Unfortunately they don't have Real Life Videos (RLVs) or other gimics to kill the boredom that comes w riding a trainer.

Gene, do you know Frazer? I've seen him on his e-motions, on which he just recently did a 12 hour ride for charity. It was a very high quality product and the back-and-forth motion was very slick. He even got up and sprinted for a bit. I would buy them in a heartbeat if they weren't so darn expensive...

Hey Steve. I do know Frazer, and I heard of his epic roller ride. That was CRAZY! But he is an animal, with a will of steel. The videos I've seen of the E-Motion product in action are amazing to say the least, and I'm not surprised about the quality, but a $ 800 for a set of rollers??? I think they're fooling themselves! At that price point they are going to have very few takers.

Sadly the TACX Fortius was FAR more expensive than the E-Motion rollers, but the RLVs are v cool. This past weekend I rode the Galibier and Alp D'Huez (in my garage of course). The issue is the product claims to simulate steep climbs (think 10+%), but really only simulates up to 5%. You have to dummy down the course (e.g., reduce the Galibier's grades by 40%) to get the unit to work. Most think the issue is with the flywheel being too small. But this is only one of their issues. Their electronics and power supplies are flaky; they didn't support Vista for the longest time; their software quality control and updates are amateurish at best; and their documentation is cryptic. You spend a lot of time chasing windmills.

Like I said before if I knew then what I know now I would have gone another direction. Sad because the RLVs are pretty amazing. Maybe I'll see you Sunday. The Chicken Ranch Team is doing a Solvang ride Saturday, and I'll probably do the worlds on Sunday. It's supposed to be a great weekend weather-wise.
