Winter Tire Recommendations?

It looks like I won't have a backup ride ready this winter, being too busy with school and all, so I need to rely on my trusty old Fuji S10-S to get me around. Trouble is, the 27x1-1/4 summer slicks are pretty useless around 30 degrees, and the LBS selection for 27-inchers is grim at best. So I'm looking here:

and there are a few tempting options for a budget-minded cyclist who isn't about to hassle with changing over to 700c wheels, and doesn't have a working MTB at this moment. I'm looking at:
Kenda KrossCyklo
Schwalbe HS159 Puncture Protection
Vittoria Zaffiro Road Tire
Panaracer Pasela Road Tire
All are in my poor college student budget, i.e. $15 or so each on that site, all have what appears to be good tread for wet and cold conditions. The Kendas are 1-3/8, and the Paselas are 1". How would those mount on my 1-1/4 rims? (Okay, not mine, the bike's ;)) Any recommendations or warnings? People seem to like the Schwalbes, but maybe you know different? There doesn't seem to be a studded 27" tire out there, but the Kendas look pretty gnarly. My ride, BTW, is 10 miles RT,side streets, downhill, through town, then uphill on side streets, 5 days per week. Call it 225lbs. on a 30lb.,12-speed touring bike. TIA.

So the Schwalbe 159 or the Kendra KrossCyklo? Depends on if I can squeeze a 1-3/8" tire on those 1-1/4" rims.

I don't know if a 1-3/8" tire will clear the fenders. May be the Schwalbes, after all.

Guess I'm not clear on the temperature being a problem. What happens with your tires at 30 degrees?

What happens is they become separated from the pavement by a thin layer if ice :eek: I should have been more clear about that. I wiped out twice the other morning just out in front of my house, and the need for a different setup became quite apparent.

None of those other tires are going to help you on ice. Besides riding carefully, keeping your line and riding smoothly with no twitches, jerks or changes in direction, studded tires are about all that might help, and I can't think of any for your size tires off the top of my head, but this link will give you an idea of your options, including how to make homemade studded tires. http://www.icebike.org/Equipment/tires.htm

I'm gonna have to figure something out, then. I don't like riding the bus, and I HATE taking a car to my school's campus. It's a community college/commuter school; the other morning it took me 20 minutes to find a parking space! :eek::eek::eek: It doesn't take me much longer to bike there on a good day, but that was anything but. I'll have to see about getting my Trek MTB's frame welded, or build something else from those components. I need a winter bike, that's the bottom line.

I bought one of those Kendra 1 3/8 with small tread, I have tried putting it in the front and seeing if it helps. Honestly I do not know, I guess I could spend a night sticking screws in it, but then I wonder if one is enough, so I too am putting together a "beater". If one were to go with a studded tire which wheel do you put it on???? Please say the front:)
