Electronics, Lighting, & Gadgets - I'm a little slow - how can I mount my FENIX on my helmet?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm going to admit that I'm slow to catch on before you guys can even jump on me for such a basic question. Still, I've been struggling to get my FENIX P2LD mounted on my Giro helmet properly. It seems that the twofish lockblocks I have (I have both the perpendicular and the aligned ones) don't quiet wrap around properly through the helmet holes for a secure fit. (The twofish works great on my handlebars.) How are you guys attaching this thing to your helmet?
Woops - I've got a FENIX L2D

If you can post a picture of your helmet showing how the vents are arranged and describe which vents you want to use that may make it easier for people to give you good recommendations.
Also, not quite as important, but may have an effect on mounting options, is your light a P2D or an L2D? I don't think there is a Fenix P2LD (sure would make things confusing if there were).
Here's how I attach my Fenix P3D to my helmet (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mx2Vx4_QmBU) with a Livestrong wristband and an extra rubber spacer from a blinky. This may or may not work for you depending on your helmet vent setup. You could substitute an O-ring or some rubber bands if you don't have a Livestrong band laying around.
I was going to include some still photos with better lighting/detail but apparently Photobucket is temporarily down for maintenance. I can post some still photos later if you think that would help.

I use an old viewpoint helmet light mount. I use zip ties to attach the light to themount. I am able to angle the light up or down w/ this setup. I bet you might be able to score a mnt on ebay. They were sold by Performance a few years back. They may have some.

I have the Doodad Plus referenced by mimis and this, the twofish bikeblock.

I have a Bell Sweep R and the bikeblock works much better. The bikeblock has two smooth channels that are level and the channel compresses down on the surface of my helmet and perfectly forms to the contour of the helmet. Others have indicated that the bikeblock is higher profile than the bikeblock. But I found that when installed on my helmet I could just barely get the Doodad Plus underneath it.
The Doodad Plus is not wasted. You can use them on a mini-pump or full size frame pump to hold them very securely on your bike. My full-size Blackburn pump fits securely and a simple velcro strap similiar to the Doodad, not the Doodad Plus, is adequate. However I have a Quicker Pro mini-pump that has a crappy strap so I use it to secure that. Since I am mounting it vertically on my seat post, I used both Doodad Plus's, they come packeaged in pairs, to keep it from sliding down. The recessed channel with the dimples is ideal to hold a pump positioned where the handle goes into the pump body. The recessed part with dimples forms around the pump handle and the other part of the handle holds the pump body. Here is a good source for the doodad plus if you are interested. If you want to get the package to use one for holding a fenix flashlight and one to hold a mini-pump, they will work well. Since I had ordered both, I was able to compare them and I prefer the bikeblock for my helmet. YMMV.

I can use the bikeblock because my vents are oriented so that the channel placed on the helmet and the channel holding the flashlight can both face forward. Some helmets require the channel placed on the helmet to be perpendicular to the front of the helmet. If your helmet is like this, you are in luck. Because the twofish lockblock can be used to hold the fenix flashlight on your handlebars also giving you the option to mount on your helmet or your bars.

Maybe you are not putting enough pressure when you tighten down the blocks? Mine will sit high on the helmet and the channel will not contour to the helmet if I don't tighten it down securely. Don't be afraid to crank down on the straps and put some pressure on the blocks. If you have not tried this you might be surprised how well they will conform to the helmet.

My Giro helmet has holes that seem to just evade the proper seating of the twofish bikeblock despite my attempts to "squeeze" it down. It wants to settle down between the slats of the helmet, but it just too large to actually get seated there, and is also to big to sit directly on the slat. As a result, my Fenix seems like it's not locked down at all. Will have to look further into zip ties, perhaps?

You will probably have to put down padding of some time to keep the flash like from sliding on the slick surface of the helmet, maybe? Double-sided tape? I do not have experience but it seems like that might be a consideration.
I wrapped the lanyard around my helmet also to avoid dropping of the end cap and having to look for it on the ground. The lanyard gets a little wound up and is a pain, but I would rather have that than a lost cap.

I fixed livestrong band over fenix and the nylon case, so I plan to just slide
the light in and out. I just got it so it works in theory.

Rubber bands or velcro through the vents is all it takes, quite simple really. I also slide the light into an old section of tube so it has some tackiness to the top of the helmet. No need to purchase anything special.
Oh, and this light is incredible. Like I've said before, the best performance for the money for anything I own.

Yes, it is the same one that you are referencing.
I would not buy it again. Buy a high rated min-pump or full-size frame mounted pump that has a better mounting system. 2 Doodad Plus's would not hold it vertical on my seat post, at least in the winter, and do not provide enough height to mount it on a painted tube. The mount that comes with it does not stay latched due to poor design. I don't know if one bikeblock would work or not. I am tired of messing with it. I will hang on to it and throw it in my jersey pocket during the summer instead of the frame pump if I get to be that much of a weight weenie, which I doubt will happen.
I have went back to my full-size Blackburn pump mounted under my top tube.
If you want to put it in your jersey pocket or could find a secure way to mount it, the pump works fine. I have too many other items in my pockets to carry it during the winter.
