Recumbent - riding bent after "snip?"

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
There is a thread about riding after a vasectomy....and it seems the consensus is 2-3 weeks on an upright bike. But I dont see any info about riding supine....and I would think it would be sooner than an upright.
I am getting fixed this friday and hope to resume riding the recumbent ASAP....and am curious to know if anyone has personal experience. I am hoping to resume after 1 week....too soon?

Friend of mine who got "snipped" a few years ago, he took about 7 days off his regular bike, 3 days off from rowing machine... depending on your age and fitness, I could never stay off the bike as long as the doctor said.

I gave my incision site about 4 days to be nice and clean. didn't want to risk infection during cycling and sweating.
I honestly don't remember how long I was off the bike (and I don't ride recumbent). I just didn't feel good for a few days; came down with cold and a cough right after surgery. A cough is what you really want to avoid after abdominal surgery; the incision didn't hurt much normally, but when I coughed, yikes! So as a result I was on pain killers. Codeine and bicycling don't mix well....
So my advice is... don't get sick!
I had mine done prior to being 'bent but 4 days wait before I rode the DF. In my situation, I think 3-4 days would have been good for the bent as well.
Thanks for the feedback....my date with destiny is this friday. I have my rans set up with a trainer in the basement...if I feel up to it I am hoping to try riding it a few days afterwards...I can always put an icepack between my legs while riding! (try THAT on a DF!)

Just wait till it doesn't hurt, a week or so.

I rode an upright 9 days after surgery. It would seem like a bent would be easier.
Good luck!

don't be alarmed at the scar tissue you'll get around the tips of the vas tubes (deep inside) from the cauterizing. you will probably have two almond size lumps after a few weeks, and they might be a little sensitive. it's normal. and ya, good luck. i doubt you'll regret it.
I think it would depend entirely on how quickly you heal up. For instance, if the jewels swell up to the size of a cantaloupe (it happened to someone I know), then it will take much longer...
today is the day....i will post an update next week!

Take a picture of your bent to your first checkup and ask the doc about it. That's what I did after prostate cancer surgery and he allowed me on a bent in half the time of an upright.
Good luck!
Let's see.....my wife had me fixed after our 20-yr-old son came along. Can't remember anything bad about the procedure or recovery but I do know I took a little time off from cycling. I would agree that it would be ok in most cases to resume 'bent riding sooner than "normal" riding.
Update: Well, I had it done and survived. It's been less than 24 hours, and the discomfort and swelling at this point is mild, less than I had expected. The urologist strongly cautioned me against doing ANY strenuous exercise for a week; he says it may impact the healing. I will try to follow that advice and resume riding in 6 days...but I actually "feel" like I could hop on the recumbent right now and ride.
He didn't say you couldn't ride. A 50 mile ride at 5mph average wouldn't be strenuous, would it?

Watch out for "blowouts". If I had it to do over I would never have a vasectomy.

Make sure you keep up with the meds.. drugs are good for you.. dope up.
well it's been 3 days and I am only taking alleve and the discomfort is quite minimal. I am planning to do a low-intensity ride on the trainer on wednesday....and if that goes well hope to do a "real" ride this weekend.
Update: it's wednesday (5 days after) and I just did a very low-intensity ride on the rans in the basement (on the trainer) for 20 minutes....no problems. I promised not to do any strenuous riding for another few days, maybe this weekend if all goes well. I am off the alleve and have minimal discomfort.
