Has anyone heard of the informal hospitality program called Warm Showers? It is basically families that will house and feed bike tourers for a night along their journey. I think it started in Ontario, so I'm not too sure if it is popular in the States. On my trip around Lake Superior I had two offers for 'Warm Showers' but unfortunately neither fit into my plans for the day.

Yep. Here's the Warm Showers URL (http://www.warmshowers.org/).

You can search and find this list of threads (http://www.bikeforums.net/search.php?searchid=5097036) that mention warm showers.

It's popular all over north america and europe. Once you join, you'll get to see the database. I can't believe that many people in the world are even familiar with touring let alone willing to lend a bed or backyard to smelly cyclists!

I really like the warm showers website. Gets my vote. For bike tourists, by bike tourists.

It's a GREAT site!! I've used it quite a few times and plan to use it a lot on our next tour.

We are memebers of warmshowers and have yet to use the hospitality but have had some pretty terrific guests stop by our home. Great inspiration. :)

I've yet to try out WarmShowers, but I really love Couchsurfing.com I think they're working towards the same goal, except couchsurfing also gives you the opportunity to ask a complete stranger to sleep over their house. Sometimes they're even excited to host a smelly, dirty tourist! Cs certainly has it's big drinking sorority girls and lonely IT gurus, but everybody i've met is very good natured, with no exceptions (so far).
