Hi All. Some of you know I am a docent for the Irvine Ranch Conservancy/North Ranch. We just put a new ride on the schedule for February 24, 2008. If you go to the website - irvineranchwildlands.org and look under "activities" for February 24 you will see this description:
Description & Registration Information
This program is for riders new to mountain biking and who have little experience riding on dirt trails and/or for families with smaller children ages 5+. Small children who are riding their own bikes must be accompanied by parents who have some experience riding on dirt trails. Smaller children in buggies OK. We will be riding a fire road along a natural stream bed out to the Red Rocks and just before Irvine Lake. See interesting geology, raptor nests, plants, tracks and scat. This will be a very slow-paced out-and-back ride on a ranch road that is rutty, sandy and rocky in sections but fairly flat. Distance is 4 miles round trip. Mountain or comparable bike with wide knobby tires, helmet (for all participants), and a minimum of 20 oz water required. Some calories, gloves, spare tube, and pump recommended but not necessary.
New Beginner/Family Ride Through Red Rock Canyon
Spaces Available 17
Led By Irvine Ranch Conservancy
Activity Date 2/24/2008
Time 9:00 AM
Activity Type Biking
Distance 4 mile(s) [anywhere from 4 - 10]
Duration 2 hour(s) [more likely 1 1/2 - 2]
Elevation Change minimal [slight dips up and down]
Guided Docent-led
Recommended Age 5+
Level of Interpretation High

The intent is really to give families and very new riders an opportunity to get out and do some real mountain biking (well sortof - the route is pretty flat). We have some options that we will be exploring in the next week or so to see if the distance can be extended another 2 - 6 miles or so. But depending on the group we get (if alot of little kids vs. grown up riders) we may keep the ride fairly short. If you have some little ones you would like to get out on the bike and enjoy a morning ride with you, sign up for this one. There are lots of cool things to look at to keep everyone's interest. If you have any questions about the ride, just let me know.
This ride will start at the IRConservancy Black Star Staging area (Blackstar and Silverado off Santiago Canyon Rd) and either ride towards Red Rock or out towards Blackstar.
