Advocacy & Safety - ARGH! This A&S frustrates me ...

... and I like it.

While it raises my blood pressure and makes me sweat as I madly type out answers here or e-mail some corrupted columnist there .... I am quite interested in hearing what goes on in other areas of the country/world that has to do with bicycling problems.

I think that maybe the problem is advocacy AND safety. While the two are very much related advocacy can be a very different thing from safety concerns. FWIW it seems like most of the truly monkeys at the zoo (arguably flinging poo) discussions regard safety more than advocacy. But you know I could be wrong.

I think you are missing Tude's point. She's not stressed about the A&S discussion, but instead the ignorant newspaper editorial/stories.

The thing about the A&S forum is that it has very little to do with true advocacy or safety and is mostly a 'mine is bigger than yours' pissing contest.

I think you're right, but I also think it would be hard to discuss either aspect on its own for long.

Just a thought for real advocacy. A while ago Los Angeles had a Bicycle Co-ordinator. One thing he did was go out to the various bike clubs and ask for ideas, thoughs, wants whatever. I'm not sure how it played out with other clubs, but with the SFVBC a clear part was hazzards.

Well I responded. There were a couple of places where there were train tracks crossing at an angle in poor repair. There was a bike path set back from the road about 15-20 feet with onstreet parking right up to where the driveway turned in to Lake Balboa (San Fernando Valley, not further south). Withing 6 months all of these were addressed. For the last all it took was some red paint (and of course the huge overhead of city employees doing it).

In this case the city started the dialog. I have heard some Aldermen in NYC are responsive to this kind of thing. It might be worth a try. It is surprising how small things can lead to big things. (Oh and do give them some time, remember glaciers retreat faster than government can move).

I advocate on the basis of safety.

It's safer for everybody when someone chooses to cycle rather than drive. :)

Remember, though, always post in a vehicular manner.
