Mountain Biking - SRAM or SHIMANO shifters?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Which do you prefer and why?

SHIMANO,because.
Which do you prefer and why?
both work fine...I like the Sram grip shifts because it gives me a fist full of gears at a flick...
just don't mix Sram and Shimano shifters with incompatible rear derailleurs

sram - thumbshift means i dont have to take my finger off the brake
although new release shimano shifters do the same now, so that's all moot until i try them

The question should be SRAM vs SHIMANO deraillure. That will then determine the shifters :)
Which do you prefer and why?
SRAM.
they are simply a step above...kind of the same way that Campagnolo is a step above as well.
it's hard, sometimes reality sucks.

SRAM.
they are simply a step above...
Did you ever think you'd live to see the day that something spawned by Sachs would become synonymous with excellent shifting? ;)

SHIMANO, 'cause it has the dual-shifty thing going. That said, 50% of my bikes are SS, and the road bike is Campy... I really like SRAM chains and Avid brakes...

Pro Tip- If you don't get this post, SRAM owns Avid, along with Rock Shox, Truvativ, and PitStop.
Tschau.

Neither.
I much prefer the old SunTour XC Pro thumb shifters. They Rock!!! http://bestsmileys.com/music1/18.gif

SRAM X0 shifters hands down. XO makes for extremely quick shifts and mine have never missed a beat yet. I don't like the way Shimano incorporated the shifting with the brake lever. It felt way to loose and junky feeling to me.

SRAM, because you only have to use your thumbs, leaving your other fingers for the brakes. And I like their 1:1 shifting ratio

I don't like dual thumb shifters. I like having a choice. Shimano XT/XTR
Everyone who didn't pick SRAM is stupid.

SHRAM is the SUCK
(except for Codes)
SHRAM is the SUCKDidn't he have a band named the Pharaohs?
I have Shimano just because it came on my bike, but I tried the SRAM ones and really liked them and would probably get them over shimano. But I still hate SRAM chains and cassettes...

Shimano, just prefer it over sram.
Shimano XTR
the only one
+1 on the XTR's
I went from Shimano to SRAM to Shimano XTR and will not go back to SRAM. The XTR M970 shifters rock... It really works well with the XT Shadow rear dérailleur.

I think the new Shimano shifters are made more towards thumb shifting, for both up and down shifting.

Shimano XTR
the only one
Why?

I run Shimano, but I don't really have a special affinity for them.
I run shimano all round, however i tried running several sram chains and just didnt work at all.
When soon ill try sram again. For now its Shimano.

This is a bit weird perhaps, but I prefer Shimano for the rear shifter and SRAM for the front. I like the Grip Shift style control to have precedence over the crank rings, the rapid fire Shimano ones just need to be pushed too far and too consciously to get an accurate shift up front it seems.
