Got a nice old ten speed from a friend...horizontal drops! OK...so now the project starts. My thought is NOT to skimp on the rear wheel/hub...that way if I dig single speeding I already have that and can get a better frame etc...

What rear wheel/hub is a good place to start...I don't need the best...but I don't want something that is junk...I would like the equivalent of 105 or Ultegra....

Thanks!

What size? Can you build wheels? What's the rear dropout spacing? What do you consider cheap? What have you looked at? So many questions.

whats the rear spacing? if its 130 (or if you could cold set it to 130..) then van dessel has flip flop rear wheels for $85. I rode them for a few months, not the lightest but pretty smooth.

Are you intending on using the original crankset on the bike? Besides your wheels, what other components will you replace or recycle?

The rear end is 5 speed cog, so I think the spacing is 120...but I will measure to be sure. The wheels are 27 and yes, I can have a wheel built.

I will also replace the crank. Front brake, Stem and bars stay. May opt for a new front wheel also.

Flip Flop hub might be a good idea for a newbie, no?
