Do you have any reason to think it is stolen? How can we tell on the basis of the advert?!

Asking price is too low, no details about owner, why being sold, no picture.... It may not be stolen, but I would never buy something from a clueless owner.

A six-speed model would be a pre-2005 model.

It could be a Dahon Yeah. My 2007 Yeah has 6 speeds.
The old boardwalk (circa 2004 or earlier) had 6 speeds. If memory serves, it retailed in the sub-$300 range, so the asking price is in line with reality.
Good question though - to be most cautious, you could double-check the serial number with a local law-enforcement office:
National Bike Registry Affliliations (http://www.nationalbikeregistry.com/signups.html#Anchor-D.C.)
Or, just meeting with the seller may be enough to determine if it's legit.
And: buying from clueless owners is the best way to get stuff!! As long as you're certain you know what you're getting.

oh was showing a man the folding bikes at my work.
there was a 6 speed Dahon and our own brand.
Dahon was £300...our own was £200
So second hand you half the price...take some more off if you really dont want it
I reponsed to the ad, and got a return saying SOLD

You are right, I take my words back. With some patience , ingenuity and luck I found a great deal on craigslist:

The guy was selling it for a friend who had no idea how to sell things on craigslist/ebay. The helmet he gave me is Louis Garnaeu and seems a lot nicer than my previous Walmart Schwinn helmet..
