I have a tandem bike (Is that what it is called?) attached to my mountain bike. I take my 5 year old out on trails and around the neighbohood but I'm a little leary about taking her out on the main road near my house. The road get's heavy 40 MPH traffic with no clearly marked breakdown lane and I'm NOT going to take the lane with my little girl in tow. I take it slow in this area on the sidewalk (go ahead, lash out) until I get to a spot where there is room and the road is safer. What does anyone else do in this type of situation?

Do what feels right. There are no sidewalks around here so I'm not used to having them as an option. I've read, on these forms, that there are conditions that make sidewalks more dangerious than the road so watch for dirveways and whatever else can make them risky. I'm sure you've read the same posts as I have so you know the comments about bike paths and sidwalks being less safe than the road.

Good luck
Joe

If you are worried about being seen, you might get one of those tall flags and attach it to the tag-a-long to make your child more visible on the road. Otherwise, do what you are doing.

There is a bracket already there so it's ready for a flag. Good suggestion - I may pick one up today. :)

I spotted in the latest Gearshift catalogue (www.gearshift.co.uk) a reflector that span behind you. It might be worth looking for something similar to attach to a flag for evening or early morning rides.

I use a tow-behind tandem also, I stay away from busy roads, just local roads, rail-trails etc.

Just an FYI: I think the first of these kinds of towed cycles was the Adam's Trail-A-Bike. I believe the generic term is trailercycle although I know many who also refer to them as Trail-A-Bikes regardless. BTW, of all the cycling inventions of the last two decades, the trailercycles is the one that always exacts the biggest smile from me. There's just something really right about watching a parent tow their kid around like that. :)
