Forum Suggestions & User Assistance - Google Ads?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

How do they work? Most of them are pretty innocuous but we've had some advertising how to beat speed cameras, and avoid speeding tickets - do we want to promote this?

They are contexual ad's, that is, google sends a spider to bikeforums to index the site. When you pull up a page google has indexed, google looks at the text in the site and gives you the ad's that best match the page.
If you goto the "moving servers" thread, and look at thoes ad's, you will see ad's for hard drives and servers. If the thread you went to talked about speeding, yes, you may see speeding ad's.
Sadly, this is something i need to do to cover the costs of running this site. I have been paying out of my pocket for a few years, and i can no longer afford to do so.

I've no problem with you making the site pay for itself, and the ads are fairly small, I was just concerned about what we might be advertising. Are there limits to block porn sites and other adult services or will talk of cycling affecting a member's sex life bring up associated ads?

Interestingly about half of the ads I've recieved have been for UK based services - I presume they know where the reader is based?

Yes, it is geo-targeted. If you come upon an ad that should not be on the forums, pkace your mouse on the ad, then look at your browser status bar. That should provide to you the URL. I can block ad's by there target URL.

the ads are probably pay per click... no?
so if the members click it supports the forum eh?

Yes, but please don't click the ads unless you are genuinely interested! Overclicking, or me asking you to click the ads are against the TOS. So far, the ad's are working great. At the current rate, I can pay for 80% of the server by google ads alone :)

This was tried at ridemonkey, it back fired badly, when ELF set fire to that hummer dealer, it showed links to places to get fire starting materials.
haha, that's a good example, so please don't post any thing about Ter---rism or we might get something on how to become one.
