Road Cycling - Uggg On call this week Cant ride

I am a systems engineer so I have to respond in 10 minutes time. I have to be able to dial in from my home. I suppose I could just ride loops around my area and not get too far from home, but people might think that I am nutty going by their house 50 times in a hour.:D

Not if you went around the neighborhood yelling "I'm on call! I'm on call!" That way, they'd know why you're passing their house so often and they wouldn't think you were crazy at all! ;)

As much as I hate them how about a cell phone?

Well since you're a sys-engineer you're probably also a techno geek, so buy a compu-trainer and keep your dial in live and minimized while you do a nice mountain climb time trial :)

When I had to go on call with a job a few years ago, I'd just stick close to home and play the odds. It's all about priorities, right? Besides, there were very few occasions for problems to start right after work unless we had trouble during the day, in which case the on-call was already up to his neck in work.

The trainer idea is pretty good, too. Even a regular trainer will get the legs spinning and keep you close to the computer. You could solve problems while you ride!

Yes now I just need to sell my wife on the Idea of the Compu-trainer!!!

If i were on call to the point where I could not be more that 10 minutes from my house, I would quit.

Or, use "threeway" with help from you wife.

Actually, what does it matter where you call from?

It matters where I call from .... because 98% of the time I need to Dial in from Home and fix something... I am part of a team that manages over 800 servers, so something is always needing attention:crash: :crash: :crash: :crash: :crash: :D

you need a verizon global wireless pcmcia card (the one that works like a cell phone) with a small laptop like a dell X200 or similar laptop in a backpack. Then, if they call you just vpn in and fix away at any park bench or starbucks.

I can relate. I'm on call for the next week starting this Friday. Just love the 2:00 & 3:00AM calls when I have to be to work for 6:00AM.

Dial-in? That's so 90's. I use a VPN to get to my equipment through my cable modem.

Okie the solution is simple get a cell phone, with internet capabilities. Or get a small notebook with wirless internet, and cell with modem capabilities for that need to dial in. THen you can login and fix the problem from anywhere :)

I do too.... but how many folks here would know what a VPN is?:D it was just easier to say dial in..... god forbid that I would have to dial up on a phone line that would Kill me:D :D

I think our IT folks would get fired if they actually responded to a problem within 10 minutes. I think all problems habe a mandatory minimum 24 hour response time. With the exception being problems with critical systems where the response time is minimum 48 hours.

it's 2003 if they know what dial in is they know what vpn is.

You have 24 to 48 hours to respond? Must be nice ... we have a scant 15 minutes and if it is critical, needs to be resolved in a rapid fashion (2hours or less if possible).

Sounds to me like the cell phone/laptop solution is perfect. Just mount it to your handlebars and then you can troubleshoot and ride at the same time! There! Problem solved! :D
