I love that pump-rack (Heklucht). Beautiful form and function.

You're probably familiar with Portland's "Shelters". While they are cool, apparently the rain only falls straight down in Portland.:D

Looks like it's not finished. If it is finished I really don't understand the "shelter" part.:D

I love the pump rack. I want one.:)

I like the idea of a pump built into the rack. A solid quality chrome/stainless steel one even better. It's sad that it would never last in my area. Too much of a target. It seems it's the latest fashion trend to destroy public property. First it was burning the trash cans. Next it's setting all the port-a-potties on fire. I mean, where am I going to go? Nice pump rack though.

Those are some really nice racks, the pump would ultimately be "novel" in my mind, but they're nice looking as well as functional.

Two more mentionable racks i've seen include some ones here in Calgary: outside of one particular safeway, they have these incredibly thick and strong looking matte black racks which have a rubberized section to lift the rear end of the bike off the ground and holster it, making it hard, if not impossible to use a jack on the u-lock. It also does unfortunately make some bikes quite hard to lift up that high or seat properly, but for those it works on, its apparently quite effective. The sides of the rack can also hold a bike, and overall its one of the safest racks I could think of.

The ones outside of the college here are those typical terrible racks where its nothing but a bunch of small slots almost too small to fit your tire through and impossible to lock properly to, except that a smart individual has welded some L shaped bars to the vertical slots, and then to the main bar on the ground, these bars fit just underneath your chainstays and hold the bike very snug, also allowing great locking with little open space in the lock.

I'll try to get some pics of the finished product for you all. They put staple racks inside to lock your bike to. These work pretty well in non-windy rain, but stuff gets wet when the wind blows. I think they had to make some design compromises. The sad fact is if they had build side barriers, the shelters would have attracted both drug deals and people sleeping in them. As is, they are a huge relief to the area, even if imperfect. We have staple racks on the sidewalks in front of businesses, but they are often full and bikes were locked up everywhere. People also use them a lot to tie their dogs to. Some breeds are good about sharing the rack with a couple of bikes, but others are not. It was becoming hard for pedestrians to use the sidewalk. It's especially nice for people who have trailers to park. People aren't tripping all over your rig. You've also got the space to get the kiddies in and out of the trailer without getting in everyone's way. Very nice.

BTW, most of the money for the ones on that street were from a movie that was shot there about 5 years ago. They gave the city a lot of money for stuff like this because of how inconvenienced everyone was by their Hollywood crap.

I wish there was a way to incorporate the pump into the shelters. That would be just lovely. :)

I love the idea of a pump integrated into a staple rack like that, but I'm not a huge fan of the long staples. Seems like you could fit a few more bikes onto two shorter units than one looooong one like that, but then again there aren't many racks of any kind around here so I'd take anything. (I have seen a number of the bike-shaped racks around the Inner Harbor, but I'd never lock my bike up down there).

A lot of the Dutch bikes are longer. Maybe that's why it's the size that it is.

Ooh that's very nice! I can't imagine what it's like to see lots of bikes locked to racks around town.
