Great Lakes - Chicago Winter Bike Swap - January 19th

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

For those not able to make the Madison swap on the 12th, there is another swap closer to Chicago:

The Chicago Winter Bike Swap in Mt. Prospect on Saturday January 19th. $5 admission and free parking.

But don't forget to register for the HHH first :D

Oh yeah. Good luck on that, everyone. I'm skipping the scrum for HHH registration this year and going straight to the volunteer tent.

I'll be there searching for a new wheelset and a carbon frame to build up for the woman

I may end up there...i need me a new crank. You folks think this is worth it?

If just to do some window shopping, get some ideas, and to get the bug for riding back, yeah it's worth it.

You heading from Woodstock? If you're interested in carpooling to save some gas, let me know. Same goes for anyone else out Elgin way.

Unfortunately i'd likely be in Wheaton and would probably leave to Iowa from there...

I will most likely be there...after I register for the HHH that morning.

after I register for the HHH that morning.

First let me think about registering for the HHH.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Whew, that's a good one! Now that I've given it all the consideration my abilities justify, on to reality (although my brother just asked me about a week of riding with him in Colorado:eek::eek::eek:)

Anyway, maybe I'll see you at the Swap, before or after adding a new heating duct in the basement (old houses are such fun, a never-ending list of projects). Think there's a chance of finding a decent trainer there? Does everything worthwhile sell quickly?

voldemort, you could handle the HHH. We'll have to take a recon trip up there sometime and put you through the paces. Once you've stared down from the tops of the conquered Barlow, Pinnicle and Blue Mound climbs, everything else will seem like a downhill.

As for the swap, I don't know what to expect, but the window shopping provide just a jolt of adrenaline to get on the trainer it will be worth the trip.

There is a chance I will be at this Chicago Winter Bike Swap to sign autographs for my fans, but my agent is still in negotiations.

It takes a lot to get me away from my secret training location in the southern climes where the weather is always awesome.

Keep a sharp eye out and you just might catch a glimpse of me bringing some of that awesome to the show.

I appreciate the support, but let me do a few of those recon rides up there first, and see what I can do outside the flatlands. I read the postride comments from last year, and I don't want to be one of the casualties. When I first thought it was a century in miles, I was positive it was over my head. Now that I know it's metric, I'm dumb enough to MAYBE try it next year.:p

Now wait a minute. I swear I saw metric somewhere. Which is it, miles or metric, or is it a choice? 100 miles of hills, I'm dead meat. 100K, I'm only raw, bloody, almost dead meat.

Voldemort - it's a metric. I've ridden with you enough to know you could easily do it. Register. You can hitch a ride with me.

Easily being a relative term here. I know what you mean, though. Voldemort, we've ridden with you enough to know you could handle the ride better than many who do it.

I didn't see a single comment by anyone saying "I just finished the Horribly Hilly Hundred. That was sure an easy ride." Pain...that was mentioned more than a few times. And what's pain without leather and whips and...oops, wrong forum:o

Crud. I've got today off and was about to run out and get odds and ends (actually, not cheap odds and ends--tires, levers) and maybe a new 27 rear wheel. Worth putting off and shopping at the show?

Just got back. This meet puts the one in WI to shame. Much better stuff, but it's mostly bike shops. A lot of the same people I saw in WI last year were at this one.

Mission Bay, Sammys, The Bike Shop, etc....lots of shops. Good stuff.

Well, I ended up with a new FSA stem for $25, and Ultegra 12-23 10 spd un-used cassette for $47.50 (don't ask). A bike chain bottle opener from Voldemort for fixing his rigs (thanks man)! ....and...

....

.......uh.......

.....another bike.

:o

Details and pics to follow. BTW - CyLowe and Voldemort...it is actually bigger than my BASSO and might end up working great as my new FG/SS

Hey Psimet, Tony Tommaso will be calling you. He wants some pictures for old time's sake. I told him you'd be willing to part with the bike for $500. :)

I picked up some hubs for a SS conversion project.

It was funny to watch some folks in the bike corral key in on a ride and talk themselves into the bike. There was one woman who the dealer was telling her she might need a smaller frame, but you could see she had the fever and later I saw her walking out with the bike. I'm glad I didn't bring more money to the event. I spent exactly what I budgeted to spend on the hubs and that was that.

We also took a field trip to the new Mission Bay shop in Arlington Heights. Meh. And we also went to another shop in downtown Arl Hgts, though I already forgot the name of the shop. It was small, but the owner was friendly and she even talked Psimet into buying ANOTHER bike.... although it was really too small for him. Two bikes in the span of about an hour. He's crazy.

Picked up the best two deals at the meet, New Sram XO Rear derailuer and new XTR rear derailuer for a C Note for both.

no motor?

That other shop would be Campbell Street Bikes. I talked with the other half of the couple that owns the place, and he sounds like the kind of place/people I'd like to deal with. He rents time in his shop and will offer instruction on bike maintenance, and I can pedal there from home. Another reason to not have go back to Village Cycle!:D

Here's the Tommaso I scored....:

It's hasn't been ridden a ton. It has been in a wreck. Everything is covered in old grease so it is cleaning up real nice. Looks like it got laid down on it's right side in a wreck. Brake lever is bent inwards, Campy quill pedal on that side has dented cage and missing dustcap. Handlebars are scrapped on that side, RD show scraps from the impact. Saddle....etc.

That said the wreck didn't do ANYTHING to it. The frame's paint is in pretty bad shape, but definitely good for it's intended purpose - new FG/SS to replace my old one. The frame is a 52, but the quill stem is too short. Something like an 80mm.

The bars and stem are Cinelli "Giro d Italia" model - probably low end like the rest of the bike. Drivetrain is all 7spd 105. It's awesome. I really like it because it nails a particular 1-2 year period in time and is in amazing shape. I have been pulling out tools from the dark recesses of my toolbox to work on this one.

FD is Shimano 600 and looks like an 8spd one. I have an 8spd 600 FD so I will have to compare. Wheels are Mavic MA2 rims on 105 hubs. Hubs are still dirty, but in really great shape. I'm thinking of parting out almost all of this rig. Let me know if something strikes your fancy.

*EDIT* - anyone know for certain what thread the BB on this thing is before I start wrenching away?

Sweet! Welcome to the dark side my friend. Post in C&V and you will get all the answers you need. I am 95% certain the BB will be Italian. Giro d'Italia may be the most popular of Cinelli bars, they are most definately not low end. The stem is very common and you should easily find a longer one on ebay. Get rid of the Shimano, it's making my eyes burn on the bike. The seatpost is pretty fugly too, you best send that to the smelter.
