Bicycle Mechanics - Built My First Set of Wheels Today :)

I bought a Pyramid wheel truing stand, Park tension gauge, and a Park spoke wrench. Measured the rims and the hubs. Used the DT spoke calucalator and ordered the spokes. These are for my winter bike and the parts are vintage....Suntour Road VX hubs and Weinman Concave rims. I chose 2x since I could get DT-Swiss, SS, DB spokes in sizes less than 300mm for $13/20 from Lickton's. Anything over 300mm is hard to get and costs allot more (over $1 each). I used Sheldon Brown's directions....I now have a beautiful set of wheels and I had fun building them too.

Good work! :beer: I have a similar project setup for myself (it'll be my first time too), just need to get around to getting accurate hub measurements to make sure I get the right spokes.

Congratulations, Rich! There's nothing quite like the thrill and sense of accomplishment you get from riding on wheels you've built yourself. This first wheelset is just the beginning.

I was looking at your list of tools. Were you able to do this without a dishing tool?

Yes I was able to build them without a dish tool. With my truing stand I can center the rim. I think if you had a dish tool you may be able to build a wheel faster because you would be able to do the first tightening of the spokes more quickly.

Congratulations. Wheel building is fun once you get the hang of it.
