Southern California - LA Wheelmen Centuries Jan 26th-27th

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hey All!
LA wheelmen has back to back centuries at the end of the month.
They are self supported but the club provides route slips.
They start in Thousand Oaks.
I would like to do the Saturday one provided the weather is good
and I am back to peak performance.
Anyone interested??
Below is some info:
Saturday & Sunday, January 26 & 27 - 7:30 a.m. each day. JANUS SEQUENTIAL CENTURIES. (100 mi & 5000 ft. of elev. gain each day) Two centuries – one each day – which ride the same route around a large loop in opposite directions. Back to back centuries can be great training for the 300K brevet next weekend. You will at least want to do one of them. Last year, Saturday’s ride was the ride from Hell due to rain – as it turned out, practically the only day it rained all year. We can hope for better this year. The routes cover much of the same territory as the Highland Grand Tour loop, but, unlike the Grand Tour, these are unsupported. You can ride either day and real riders will do both (we don’t get many of those). Saturday we travel over Erbes to Moorpark, over Grimes Cyn to Santa Paula and up to Ojai over Dennison. From Ojai it’s down to the coast and back to the start with only one more climb – Potrero!! One of the most feared climbs in Southern California and you hit it at almost the 90 mile mark. Sunday, we do the reverse which means going down Potrero, and therefore it always seems a little easier (though each day has the same total elevation gain). These count towards the century of the month challenge. START: CROWLEY HOUSE PARK in THOUSAND OAKS. From Ventura Frwy (101), off & north on Hampshire Rd, L - Thousand Oaks Blvd (at T) for ½ mile, L - Oakview and L - Pleasant Way to Park. For further information: Rod Doty (310) 838-0843.

I'm thinking of doing Saturday. Ever done this route before?
The routes are very good. Saturdays is hard due to having to climb from Camarillo up Potero at mile 90.

What's the beta on Potrero? I understand there's a steep section. How long?
You in for this ride?

I am still undecided as this loop is one of the more common loops I normally do anyhow. Last year I did the Sunday ride which negated the Portero Wall climb....
Potrero from Camarillo is a little under a mile. Maybe 3/4 of a mile in the bad sections. 12.2% Average grade in that section with a max grade of 15%. If I remember correctly the elevation gain is a little under 500'.

Sounds tough, but certainly not insane.
Thanks, Adam. Hope to see you out there.
I'll try for Sundays as I work all Saturdays. Trying to get that changed though.

I have done all of the route @ same point or another..
I have only climbed Potero once from the Camarillo side and it wasn't as bad as I had thought
It would be (of course it wasn't @ the end of a long ride!)
This is a awesome area to ride!
Hope to see you!

Bump.
Karen, I think we (Cassave, Vertical Bob) passed you going the other way this past Saturday on Mulholland, right before Decker (you, in pink, looking a bit like Pippi?)
Who's in for this ride? Don't know what weather will be like yet, but I'm still 85% in.

Yeah, it's funny how the internet works. Not sure if either Cassave or I have ever met you, but 2 seconds after passing you, we looked at each other and said "That looked like Karen###".
I am still in for the ride, myself, but have to add a "tentative" qualifier. I'm not much of a weather watcher, and didn't realize we were in for quite the deluge that they forecast. Rain and temps in the 40's sounds like a little bit of a downer.
I'm kind of set up for a Saturday ride, but I'll see if I can't make Sunday. Is that your plan? I'll post on Friday when the weather picture might be a little clearer.
Looks like Adam is doing the SGRT ride. C'mon Adam, flats is for pansies!

I would rather ride Saturday , but weather wise if Sunday likes better, I will do Sunday!
I REALLY want to do a century this weekend!
I live 2 miles from the start, so if you want to PM me your e-mail address(sometimes I can't log on here from home) I can let you know very early Saturday morning what it looks like outside...

Well it seems that Tomorrow may be clear with another storm coming in tomorrow night.
Anyone still want to do this ride??
Or am I crazy for even still considering it?
Adam? Paul?

Isn't is always like that with the forecast?
That is the best thing to do, look out the window in the AM.
Lets keep our fingers crossed!
I REALLY want to ride!!

The roads will still be wet... I'm more than likely out unless the sun shines and drys out everything and proves the weatherman incorrect.
