Yes nacy333,

I was riding about a foot or so in front of John when it happened, and a strong gust hit us from the left side. It moved me over a bit on the road, and I was leaning into it when John hit the deck. And we had been discussing the wind conditions since the gusts seemed to be coming from all directions.

Thankfully he was in really good shape before the fall, so he should heal quickly!

Rick / OCRR

I was riding with my Mavic ES wheels and they do catch the wind. My guess is that I was somewhat off balance, perhaps I had taken a hand off my bars to grab a bottle or something, and a gust hit me and I wasn't able to correct, or I over corrected. I really don't know and it's really irritating.

I looked at the data from the Garmin and I was accelerating when I crashed. I had just passed 19 mph, so I wasn't going as slow as I thought I was. I don't remember what happened, however. :(

19 going up GRR and accelerating?? Wow....

Glad you are home and feeling better!!!

JP - while you are in the hospital you can get that penis enlargement you've always wanted.

get well soon!

I heard everything's bigger in Texas, is that why you had to leave? :p

Yes, unfortunately we didn't have those motorcycles with the cameras like they do in The Tour! That way we could see every detail and figure out exactly what happened. On the other hand, maybe it's better . . . that would be a painful video to watch!

And Herb, we were on a downhill section doing 19 mph, not uphill!

You did ride by, we were off the right side at the gate to the experimental forest. I recognized you when you passed, but it took a while for it to register and you were already gone. Later on someone rode by that looked sort of like you and I called him "Josh," even though I knew it wasn't you and that you were wearing a different kit. Weird, huh? I was having a hard time getting my mind and mouth to work together.

I saw someone sitting with what looked like an old Velo Club Claremont jersey. I asked if they were ok and got a nod, so I kept going. I had heard the motorcyclists talking and was wondering if it was a BF rider because I knew some were going to be up there. I was bummed when I heard it was you. (I feel bad for anybody that crashes, but John is one of four or five that I have actually talked to on this forum.)

My release paperwork from the hospital says it takes 6 months to heal separated shoulder. I have a follow up appointment with my main doctor in two weeks, hopefully he'll tell me I can hop back on the bike in a month or so...

I broke my collarbone a couple of years ago. A break probably heals faster than a separation, but I spent some time on the trainer and the elliptical trainer at the gym. The issue will be how much pain you can tolerate and that is why I rode the elliptical trainer before the wind trainer ( I didn't have to support myself with my arms) and the wind trainer before I got back out on the road.

My brain is still scrambled. :( I had to stop by Trader Joes to pick up some stuff and had a hard time with the credit card reader. Now I'm thinking I shouldn't ride my bike until I'm sure my head is healed, I'd hate to crash again because my faculties haven't all returned.

That was us, DutchBoy2 was wearing the old Velo Club jersey. It was really weird because I recognized you, but couldn't get the words to come out of my mouth to say it.

DUH! You may NOT ride your bike until your head has completely healed. I don't even need to sign Mother Mary on this one. Sonia will kill you if you even think of it. And I'll help her.

I didn't think it would be the limiting factor, after all there are a lot of people that ride and are less coherent than I am, and some may even post here! :D

I'd still consult with a doctor first, though.

Yeah I can only speak to the bodily injuries not the head injuries.

So I forgot this little tidbit from when I was at the ER...

I had taken off my jersey because I thought they were going to want it removed, but they didn't need it off so I ended up in just a baselayer and my bib-shorts. So I'm wheeled over to get a catscan and the tech looks at me and says "What happened, were you wrestling and got hurt?"

I started to put it together after I read some of Beanz's posts in other threads and some of your posts. At the first time trial I ever did, Chris Hoekwater (sp?) showed up in one of those jerseys and smoked everyone. The jersey wasn't so old at that time. I also trained alot with Terry Martin when I first started racing and I did the tandem road race at nationals with Ernst Grinkel two years ago. I think Terry was a VCC rider and I know Ernst was.

JP, I had a crash in 1988 on the bike path in Marina Del Rey. Got the concussion, couldn't walk for a week without putting a hand on the wall, (wasn't wearing a helmet). Also got the seperated A/C joint in the left shoulder. I decided to have the tendon transplant surgery, I'm glad I did. I did gain 35 pounds in 6 months through self pity and gorging myself on ice cream.

John put the link in and I merely was asking, for educational purposes, if the little tight blue undies on that model is indicative of the type of attire men who wrestle in mud together wear. It's you men who are thinking the dirty thoughts about those tight blue undies!

Well, except for Vance. He was more focused on the guy's bangs.

Redal,

That's me back in the old days. It is a Santana from the early years, when they had only one model. The only option at that time was Dura-Ace crank arms and chain rings for an extra $100 (vs the standard TA's).

I've still got the bike and I'm trying to "rebuild" the front engine at this time . That's why I was on the ride with JP and the others Sunday.

I figured it was a Santana since I thought VCC was sponsored by Bud's.

Ah yes, Bud's. I was working at 2-Wheel Transit Authority when Paul (2-Wheel) was battling it out with Bill(?), the owner of Bud's, for bike shop supremacy in SoCal. It wasn't pretty.

Yes, I remember Bill McCreedy at Bud's in Claremont, back in the day. We started Mojave by Moonlight there in '78.

I worked for Alan Goldsmith then (Bikecology) as we battled with Bike Nashbar for Mail-Order supremecy!

That was about when I got into riding. Did Bill ever buy 2-Wheel Transit? My wife worked for Bill the last year and a half that he owned Bud's and when her brother was interested in buying Bud's we got the low down on Bud's and Bill's one time bike shop empire. One thing I found interesting was that he invented "Supersale" and later sold the idea to Trek.

I bought my Santana prior to the existence of Velo Club Claremont, back in about 1978. I believe the serial number stamped on the BB is #56. When I bought mine there was another Bud's Bike Shop in Alta Loma on Baseline Road near Carnelian Street. That shop was run by Peter Bohr, now a freelance writer with articles in Road & Track, Car and Driver, Westways and other magazines.

I have a "conversion kit" which allowed my kids to ride on the back when they were little. It was fun for the kids and they have all got medals and trophies to show for their efforts. It was always a hoot to go out and "spank" the adult tandem teams in time trials and 25 miles rides. I'm just not sure the adult teams felt the same way about the results. :D
