Foo - Gonna get one of those newfangled LCD monitors. No idea which one..

I have no idea what I am doing. I play games so I need a fairly fast one,
but the 2ms have 6 bit color, so I have doubts about them. I have an old 20 inch screen now, I am hesitant to get a 20 inch widescreen and lose that vertical space. They still make 20 inch screens that are not widescreen, I suppose I could get one of those.

A 22 inch widescreen would have a picture about as tall as on my 20 inch 4:3 monitor; but hardware gurus on another forum suggested I go with 20 or 24. They seemed to think 22 was an oddball size. I like the idea of 24 but I am worried my video card will have problems pushing that many pixels. I know my wallet will have trouble pushing that many dollars :eek:

So I am bewitched, bothered and bewildered....

Three hundred bucks doesn't get you anywhere near cutting edge. Think 42 inch
wall mounted with dual 600 hundred (each) buck video cards. You can go further than that, but I might do damage to all those fuzzy feelings you have been having lately :p

Always hear great things about Samsung monitors and love the two I have now, View Sonic being a close second choice in my book. A lot of the guys at the office are running 22" wide screens and they look fine to me. I really don't see any need to go to the 2ms monitors, I've yet to detect any ghosting or artifacts on a 6ms.

I have a 22" Samsung and love it (though it makes going back to my 15" standard monitor at work a bit weird). I've never had a 20 or 24 so can't say if 22 is strange, doesn't seem it to me. If you want model number etc I can probably dig it out.

I love the ViewSonic my wife got me. I think it is a 19" widescreen, but it is sharp and seems fast, though I do not game. My son does a bit, but his games are online things from Hotwheels and the like, not anything graphics intense.

Viewsonic Pro monitors used to be the hot ticket. That's what I have. The reviews I
am seeing on Newegg seem to be saying that Samsung has an edge over Viewsonic, at least in the retail market. The Westinghouse 24 inch LCD is very popular with gamers.

I used a Samsung Syncmaster 172T before with 1280x1024 resolution and 25ms response time and the 226BW made for a perfect monitor upgrade for my new computer. I've been using the 226BW for about 4 months now. 1680x1050 is a great resolution for everything i've thrown at it including gaming (though you'll need a decent videocard to run most newer games in that resolution). The monitor response time is as fast as you can get these days on an LCD and the monitor is so bright that i have it turned down to 15/100 (which means there's plenty of room to turn it back up as the monitor ages and fades).

There were some "issues" with the 226BW when it was initially released (some debacle over some monitors that used panels made by another non-Samsung facility which were still good but not as good as the panels produced by Samsung themselves) but those have been resolved with the latest crop of monitors from what i can tell.

I was considering a 24" monitor but my desk space at home (or lack of) made it unfeasible... The 226BW just bearly fits. :lol:

My previous monitor was a Samsung LCD. It was a great little thing. Currently using an Apple Cinema Display. An even greater (not so little) thing. :)

On the other hand, the Dell I'm using here at work is an awful piece of junk. But hey, it's a Dell, that's to be expected.

Currently using a 28" View Sonic at work... Oh so nice, but probably out of the typical price range, but not by far.

I also have the 22" Samsung widescreen monitor. It's fantastic for my gaming needs. I play a lot of Halo 1 and 3 on the xbox 360 using the vga connector and am very picky about the refresh rate speed. It's about the same speed as my 9" Sony color tv which is very fast. I actually started with the 23" lcd tv that was used in the 360 kiosks but the refresh rate is dreadful so I exchanged it.

I have a 22" Acer (AL2223W) wide-screen monitor that I'm happy with...except that I kinda wish I'd bought a 26". I don't do games, so I can't vouch for its performance in that respect.

Don't consider just the over-all size, but think of the pixel count, too, and the pixels per inch. I used to have a 19" CRT that was in the neighborhood of 70 pixels/inch (at 1024 x 768), and the 22" LCD is about 90 pixels/inch (at 1680 x 1050...and that's the only resolution at which it looks good). A 26" LCD would be in between (at 1920 x 1200). Everything is somewhat smaller on the LCD than it was on the CRT, but I get more stuff on the screen at a time.

My video card didn't have 1680 x 1050 as one of its standard settings, but it accepted it as a custom setting and works fine.

Buy.com has a great deal on Viewsonic 24" LCD monitor for $359 with Google check-out (http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=206529430).

Viewsonic has some 22" widescren displays (DVI input) for a fair price. I have the VX2235wm and am more than happy with it. Good color saturation and fast response time. If you don't know what a DVI is, it's a very wide white connector that should be on your video card (if yours does not, get one that does). It should look like this:
