So a couple weeks ago, a me and a friend decided to go up highway 39 for our saturday ride. (He's training for the death ride (ie. crazy) and dragged me along) It actually turned out to be a great day and he wrote up a report on his blog with some amazing pictures of the trip. One of the main reasons this is now one of my favorite rides is the road is commonly closed off to cars, which means, 15 miles of peaceful climbing, if there is such a thing, and a beautiful descent where i dont have to worry about cars. Ill let him tell the rest of the story in the blog.

Fantastic! Great pics, and thanks for sharing your ride experience - I'd definitely like to ride that sometime soon, as well.

report: http://15rides.blogspot.com/2007/12/highway-39-attempt-2.htmlI was up there on Saturday as well, a great and beautiful day. Did you notice that the sign forbidding cyclist past the gate was gone? It is actually broken off and lying face down on the bank. I stopped at one of the burned out cabins around the 4000ft mark to talk to the owner, Mark. His is one of only 3 cabins that are being allowed to rebuild out of 50 that were lost in the 2003 fire.He wants to build it out of concrete so it can't burn again, good idea. I ask him what he does for water up there and he said they drink straight from the spring coming out of the ground. That's good to know come summer. There are a few springs right by the road that others have said they drink from. I think I would give it a try if need be. Rumor is that they aren't going to open the road till 2009, yay.

Where is that wood sign that you (or your friend) is standing next to? I usually hike in to Bear Creek for overnight hikes from bottom where it splits from the West Fork but I have never hiked it from the top down. I had thought the top entrance to Bear Creek was lost to mudslides that happened after the S-Fire.

The wood sign is right before the gate that closes off the rest of the road. So if you take highway 39 up as far as you can in a car, it'll be right on the left.
