Forum Suggestions & User Assistance - please remove the sewing sticky in the ss/fg forum

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

basic common sense should tell you that it doesn't belong there.

if it werent a sticky it could even be a pretty cool thread. but making it a sticky just encourages the further lowering of an already shamefully low signal to noise ratio.

thank you.

I think it should be moved into the resource thread.

Couldn't agree more. This thread is not only totally and completely irrelevant, but it could only possibly ever appeal to the smallest segment of the readers. Further, it clutters up a board that already has too many stickies in the first place.

Allowing a "sewing" sticky sets a pretty stupid precedent that basically any moderator can sticky whatever crazy and inconsequential hobby-related thread they feel like starting.

I think it should be moved into the resource thread.

the resource thread is for singlespeed and fixed gear bicycle related resources. i'd love to have a comprehensive homebrewing sticky, but it doesn't belong there.

it should be a thread that gets bumped based on interest just like any other off topic thread.

blickblocks knows this.

I think there are enough people interested in this that it is relevant to the forum. I can see merging it with the resource thread, but I think it would be a shame for it to be removed completely. Maybe a DIY subforum is in order somewhere on bikeforums?

I agree. Unsticky it and "I like discuss" and "Batty Awards" as well. I like discuss is a just SS/FG foo (which we already have a foo subforum for) and Batty's because it is mid-January.

true. it shouldn't be deleted, it just shouldn't be given priority over bike threads just because a moderater happens to be into it.

i think a diy subforum would be a good solution (esp. since the diy thread has kind of fallen out of use). if there were one, i'd think a sewing sticky would be very appropriate.

There's no priority. It's a directory of existing threads on the subject as well as some helpful links. The idea of stickies are to reduce the number of essentially duplicate threads ("I want to make a bag, where do I start," etc.).

The other moderators and I are planning to wipe off the off topic posts and lock the thread. The only reason I left it unlocked was for people to add links (if you want to add links after the lock just PM a mod).

That's also a great idea, it would complement the framemaking subforum. Don't think that will stop people from complaining though.

Yes please.

And then it would be nice to have some of these repetitive/identical threads merged, locked, or deleted. Some of the mods say that it is hard for them to always see these sorts of threads/posts, as Bikeforums is not a full time job, yet some of them post frequently in these particlar threads.

A DIY subforum may be the best overall solution. People who are interested can go to town, but it's out of the way of those who aren't interested and it doesn't clutter up the SSFG forum itself. It should probably be its own forum category rather than just a subforum of something like SSFG, as it would be of interest to more than just the SSFG crowd.

Don't think that will stop people from complaining though.

it would make the forum more organized and help people who come here to talk about bikes.

while you might not stop everyone from complaining, you are able to make decisions based on common sense and hope people will see that and perhaps exercise some of their own.

Can we just merge it with the resource thread? We already have links in the DIY thread about making a top-tube pad, a messenger bag back pad, and a polo mallet. Those 3 things are not specifically about cycling but cycling related. Can we create a 'sewing' section in the resource thread and de-sticky the original?

i love this suggestion.

unsticky all the ot ****. it's so stupid. we have enough ot posts in every thread so that ssfg can still have it's character, but we don't need stickies for it.

Posted the links in the SSFG resource thread.

We knew you'd come around, Blicks. Now get rid of the "stupid" and "batty" threads, and the board will be somewhat decent.

The stupid thread was stickied by Kemmer as a way of getting rid of all the bull**** threads that people constantly post. If you don't like it take it up with him.

The batty thread is supposed to end today (Jan. 15th).

Maybe I'll unsticky I like discuss and just keep merging OT stuff into it. If I just delete/lock ******** threads, 3 more pop up in their place. (remember penguins week?)
