just how much do I have to gain from going from Ultegra crank set to a 400 gram carbon fiber one? What kind of bang for the buck do you get for about a 90 gram drop of weight in this area? anyone ?
You get the bragging rights :) Honestly you will not notice much differnce but it definately looks better.

At one time I thought about getting carbon cranks for my mtb. THere are better ways to spend your money. ...I ended up with XT hollowtech cranks on that bike and have been very happy. ....The WHEELS man!! ..spend it on wheels..
Bikesick is right. At some point, carbon fibre becomes so much high-tech wicker. Use the money elsewhere and if you have extra cash leftover, send it to me. :) Okay so that may not be an acceptable end-run. Seriously though, carbon fibre cranks are mainly cosmetic. They usually don't detract from performance but also don't really add much either. That said, I do have CF cranks. I had already thrown money at other parts of the bike and had some left over so I popped for some FSA carbon cranks. I'm very happy with them but would not consider them a performance asset.
