News & Announcements - Search is scheduled to be fixed!!!!!!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I got a big long explanation of the fix for search, something involving magic pixie dust, re-indexing the database, and possibly replacing a flux capacitor on the server. The process is scheduled to start around 9PM PST, and expected to take all night. Search should be fully functional tomorrow morning.

I just finished installing the new search. Search should be working at this point, however the posts are still indexing so the results may be light for the next few hours. Should be okay by morning.
Kevin
Thanks for all your work on this. I know it's been a huge issue.

As you've probably noticed, the index process didn't work last night. BikeForums had some unusual quirks to the data which caused it to hang part way through. We've made a fix and it appears to be indexing properly at this point. I'll let you guys know when it finishes.

Indexing is complete. Results should be showing up correctly in the search.

I am finding this a very frustrating downgrade to the way I use the forum. Is there a simple way to see a list of threads I have posted in that have new posts in them? Perhaps a check box I have missed? I am uninterested in the email thing.
Thanks.

Wow...what I difference! I conducted one of my regular searches and was so surprised with the output that I had to come here to see what was up.
Thanks. I love the fact that while the original message comes back, you can also see the individual posts that match your criteria without wading through page upon page (for long multi-page threads) of output.

Do you use the subscription list?
Just started to, but I find it much less convenient. I like to post in several forums, and this makes it harder to keep track of the conversations.

The new search doesn't do everything the old search did. I know that's going to be frustrating. Please understand that we didn't make this change randomly. The old search has problems. Its slow. Its resource intensive to run. And it tends to break things. From my experience on another VB forum, as the site grows search will perform worse and eventually start impacting the rest of the site. We've already seen the leading edge of this in a couple of recent incidents and we are trying to get on top of it.
That said, it appears that thread display mode isn't working correctly -- everything is showing in post display mode regardless of the setting. Once we get that fixed, it still isn't going to do everything that you want, but it should be better. Beyond that, we're going to continue to develop the search application and definitely welcome constructive feedback.

I think you've got it backwards. Everything is displaying in thread mode:

That's not thread mode. Its actually a hybrid mode that isn't enabled by default. In any case the mode selector is working correctly now, so you should see what you are supposed to be seeing.

And with that, everything looks fine now - thanks, Kevin!

I think we need a recount.

i think i enjoy the speed of the new search, but hate the fact that the only reason i used the search was to find specific posts in a thread, not the thread that contains the post.
imagine trying to find a specific post in a thousand-post thread. our new search won't help you at all.
unless i'm missing something.

okay, i am missing something...sort of:
to look at a member's most recent specific posts, instead of clicking the username in-forum and choosing "find other posts by...", go to "search the forum, search by user name, sort results by "post date
" and show results as "posts" then search.
i think it groups the users posts by day (not necessarily in chrono order within that day, but by day none-the-less) and when you click it, it takes you straight to the post, instead of the beginning of the thread.
so anyways.
if you want to search for your own most recent posts to see if they've been updated, that's how you do it.
or if you want to find a specific post, click "sort by" and choose "posts."
mods, is there any way to change the "Find More Posts By ..." feature to display by posts and sort by date instead of displaying by thread and sorting by relevance?

Oh... wait... I see the problem now:

I try to live by the maxim:
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it"
…others seem to live by the one which reads:
"If it ain't broke, fix it until it is!"
;)

Mods,
Looks like the "Sort Results by...Post Date" function is broken (HPPT Status 500 error). The other sorting functions (Relevance, Author, etc.) seem to be functioning normally.
