I am experimenting with nutrition bars for my endurance rides. I am mildly diabetic (type 2) so i look for low sugar options. I can tolerate some sugar but try to avoid anything high in sugar content even when riding 4+ hours.
The South Beach Diet Nutrition bar show zero sugar but 18 grams of sugar alcohol. What the heck is the difference? Should I treat them as equivalent as far as my evaluation of "high sugar" vs. "low sugar". Other low sugar options such as Atkins bars are out there but I'd love to hear any other suggestions.

sorbitol is a type of sugar alcohol and can cause diarrhea. A small piece of gum has about 1.5g.

I tried out sugar alcohol's to see if they were going to be a viable alternative but they caused worse issues than just plain sugar does. Sugar alcohol's aren't digested in the small intestine, hence they're allowed to claim that they are no/low calorie. All that undigested sugar then passes into the large intestine/colon however which can cause the loose bowel movements by drawing water into the colon and in my case, LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS of GAS!!!!
No benefit really.
WHILE you are riding just eat standard food, sugar in it or whatever.
your body is mopping up the glucose. you only need to worry about
being diabetic when you are not in the middle of exercise.
so stay away from that sugar alcohol stuff, it'll only make you cramp up and need to take
a dump anyway.
but while on the bike making some wattage, do not worry. eat normal.

Thanks guys. "Eat normal" sounds sensible and right here. The side effects of the sugar alcohol sounds like a TV drug ad disclaimer. Other than farting and crapping your pants, it's just fine :0)
