Mountain Biking - How many times have you done this!?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I was riding yesterday and about 6 miles in I pick up a big stick. I didn't pick it up with my hand, but, with my rear der. and spokes. It broke 5 spokes and my hanger. The XT der. looks to be fine the hanger did its job well and broke first. I also twisted the Sram PC-59 chain. This is the second time I have done this in a year. The last time I had a LX der. and it broke in half.
I am taking the wheel to my LBS to rebuild the wheel. I just had my wifes rear rebuilt and its not cheap. The sad part is, my wheel set has less than 100 miles on it. :(
Yup, it happens - there is really no way to avoid it. Whenever I hear the sound of something in my wheel, I try to stop pedaling ASAP, and coast to a stop and check it out. Unfortunately, sometimes it's already too late.

Why did you have your wife's rear rebuilt? Was there anything wrong with it? Slapped that a$$ one too many times? HEHEHEH
Sorry couldn't resist:p
It's happened to me once, but fortunately there was no damage. I threw a small stick about 1 inch in circumference into my spokes, and it locked up between the stays. Fortunately I was climbing and not moving quickly. It caused me to smash into a tree when it locked up though. Sort of a wierd feeling.

I've had this happen numerous times. The most painful was when I put a brand new Sram 9.0 derailleur on my bike and was hitting the trails for the first time with it! Crunch! Snap! Fortunately didn't get into the spokes, but ripped the derailleur in half!

Yep. Snapped off the rear der. at the mount. Walked two miles back to the truck. I still have the der. I guess I keep it to remind me not to run over sticks.

awwww someone needs a hug!
*hug*
there, feel better now dont ya? :)
I picked up the small end of a branch in my spokes and that acted as a leader to thread and pull in the rest. The bigger part jammed between my tyre and my chainstay and bent the right stay. Scratch one Specialized HardRock. :(

i get laid off from my job ( in 2001)so im gonna ride for a little to destress.get about 3 miles into the woods and this pine tag stick catches in my 7.0SRAM and its broke at the point of no rigging up the chain to coast .so i had to carry my bike 3 miles out.chain screwed into gears some how and it all locked up tight.get out and get home call LBS they say no got must swithch to shimono(new everything),i get there(30 miles away) and what do i find ON THE FRIGGING SHELF a brand new 5.0 for $19 got me thru the no job in style till icould upgrade to 9.0.never had another problem except those ninjas tried the same with me so i used my broken gears as stars and took out three the other one got away and burned old dixie down(the drought).i read where most canadians dont spend a lot on der.cuz they just gonna break in da woods any way.i agree.little sticks can do big damage
You could have removed the derailler, taken a few links out of the chain, and ridden semi-singlespeed home.

rode my bro's bike and ripped the rear derraileur all the way around, bent the ish out of the rear wheel. had to rig it semi singlespeed and try to coast it 5 miles to car. took 2 hours.
I had to carry it 6 miles! My sholder is still tender. The first time I was able to break the chain and go semi-ss but this time it was to ucked fup. I wrapped a spare tube around the top tupe for some padding but it didn't help much.
I feel much better knowing that I am not the only one.
