OK. I know this may be the silliest question ever posted here, but what's the best way to fold a tube so it's small but the nipple doesnt stress the rubber around its base too much? I've tried folding my tube ten different ways and I can never get it as small as I know it'll go w/o stressing the rubber around the nipple. I want it to go in my saddle bag, but not be a space hig...

Also, when you get a new tube, do you test it before packing it away or just assume it's OK?

I roll mine in a manner identical to the way they come packaged.

The more I got into cycling the more I felt I had to carry, that is, patch kit, spare tube, inflator, cartridges, tire levers, 6mm allen wrench, cell phone, ID, a couple of bucks, some change, bandaids, alcohol wipes, and garage door opener. I finally just got a larger seat bag - Nashbar I think - expandable to 135 cubic inches. It all fits. I'm just one that doesn't care for things in my jersey pockets other than a breakfast bar or two.

suggestion----------------------------------------------------:

put the tube in an old cycling sock. that way it is protected against rubbing other things in the bag...and you have a cute little mitten (the sock) to handle dirty thingS.

Those suggestions are fine, but I really just want to know how to fold the tire tight. I've already unrolled it, so I only kind of remember how it was packaged, but I keep thinking I can do better :)

A larger wedge is out. I have my saddle kind of far back anyway and a large bad hits the back of my thighs (I'm kind of a clydesdale).

I roll it up around the stem. Not super tight, but not loose. Main thing is getting the air out. The tube isn't stretched or pulled much around the base of the stem. I've never had any trouble. This gets it small enough to fit in my tiny wedgie seat pack with a patch kit, multi-tool, and 2 tire levers.

What roadbuzz said.

Although I seldom use valve caps on my wheels, I always screw a cap onto the spare tube valve to prevent the possibility of the sharp tip puncturing the tube. (Of course I'm referring to presta).
