I hate when this happens. It seems to take me way too long to go to sleep by myself. Last night, it took well over an hour and I woke up at least twice. I have no idea what the problem is. I didn't drink anything caffeinated. Luckily, the third time I woke up was two minutes before my alarm was set to go off.

Today I feel like I haven't slept a bit. Any suggestions?

Stress does the same thing to me. Nothing helps but a hard work out or a sleeping pill.

I'm trying to avoid sleeping pills. Much of it is just getting my head clear. If I can do that, I can sleep.

That sucks. If you're watching TV in bed, you might want to stop that. I've heard that you shouldn't watch TV/movies/video games an hour before bed as well.

I will trade you your bad nights of sleep for my sleep the past couple of weeks. I have had horribly vivid nightmares the past two weeks straight.

Ugh - I feel your pain. I've been waking up on & off for the last couple of nights. I think I might actually leave work early today & try to nap this afternoon.

I start to feel physically sick after enough sleep deprivation.

When I get that way, I usually drink more water throughout the day. Just not too much after dinner. It is probably stress related.

I couldn't tell you how many times I looked at my clock in the middle of the night last night!!! It sucks! My mother suggested sleeping pills too but I hate them. They don't work for me. So hmmm maybe I should take my text book from my class to bed with me? :)

Are you thinking of stuff you have to get done the next day? If so, try writing down a list of those things and how to get them done. Having a plan may take the worry away and allow your mind to relax.

All the time. I hate my sleeping habits, I have always had issues (when I was a teenager I slept about 2 hours a night)...it hasn't gotten much better. Part of the reason why I started drinking more, it was the only way to turn off my brain haha

I won't take sleeping pills, but I get a night like that once in a while. It's very annoying, which doesn't help matters any.

Though back when I used caffeine, pretty much every night was like that. It took at least a half an hour to fall asleep, sometimes as much as three hours. Once I quit, I settled into a more normal sleeping pattern.

This happens to me as well, and it does suck! I also had sleeping problems when I was younger, even as a child. I know I always go on about this, but I think what helps the most is diet and exercise. When I am eating my healthiest and getting plenty of physical activity, I find I sleep better.

Reading also helps, as does having an orgasm.

I'll give you the orgasm (not literally) but eating right and reading do nothing to help me sleep.

Everyone always give specific advice on how to sleep based on what works for them. Trouble is, that everyone is different and can or can't sleep for a myriad of different reasons. Each individual is wired uniquely as well and while one activity such as TV may cause one person to not be able to sleep, for others like me I can't sleep without it.

Some people have a "night cap" before bed to help them sleep. A strong alcoholic drink before bedtime makes me WIDE awake. My wife can fall asleep in 5 seconds, takes me 5 hours if I am not tired enough. Again, it's an individual thing.

The only constant involving sleep is your body must be physically tired. When you can't sleep, check and make sure this is the case. Just because the clock on the wall says bedtime doesn't mean that your body is ready to slumber.

I wish I could give you suggestions. All the usual stuff doesn't work for me. If you only have problems sleeping and are not an insomniac you could just battle it by using the suggestions above

1 - organizing you day so you stop thinking
2 - activity
3 - orgasm (may be part of number 2 to be honest)
4 - quiet time...

If you are an insomniac, none of that stuff will help much, only medication (self or otherwise).

Very true. What works for one person may not work for another. When I was little my mom would do this kind of hypnotizing thing. She'd walk me through stretching and relaxing all the muscles in my body one at a time, and then do some visualization exercises. I've tried to recreate this as an adult, and I always get sidetracked with different thoughts.

Its funny when I was going to sleep therapy when I was young meditation was one of their favorite things to push. I find meditation to be the most difficult task ever assigned me in my life. I cannot manually turn off my head. I always keep thinking.

Needless to say it made for some very frustrated therapists who thought meditation could cure cancer hahaha

Meditation IS very difficult and I feel the same way. I have a hard time turning my thoughts off. I would say that is one of my biggest roadblocks when trying to fall asleep. That's why I think reading helps. I can focus all of my energy into something else and not really have to think about it. I can just take it all in. I suppose the same could be said for achieving an orgasm but with the added benefit of having all your muscles relaxed afterward. I don't know about you guys, but sometimes this is a full body workout! :p

That's why I think reading helps. You think that's bad? I have such a hard time turning my thoughts off that I haven't been able to read an actual book in years. I just can't focus enough to take it in. I used to read like crazy, but now I find that I'll space off and think about things (either tangential or random), and suddenly realize that I have no idea what the last two pages said.

It's a relaxation technique. Basically go through and tense each muscle for about five seconds then let it rest for about ten. This works most of the time. Sometimes I don't even get all the way through. As for the waking up bit, I think my cat was getting into things and the sound woke me up.

I should be fine tonight. A lot of it is not having a good way to break out of work and work thoughts. I haven't been shooting archery. I haven't been doing music so much. I don't have a TV, so I don't space in front of that.

Kudos for not having a TV! :) Yeah, maybe you should just pick up some of your hobbies again?
