Arizona (Sedona) Mountain Biking

We'll be in the Sedona area March 8 thru 11 and I would like to get in a couple of rides. I've looked into guided trips thinking that might be the best way to explore unfamiliar trails but am not sure that I want the expense or the feeling of riding at a restricted pace or other restrictions. I'd like to get in a morning ride on Sunday and Monday and am thinking it may be better to just try to hook up with a local riding group. Also, is it worth shipping my bike out there for a couple of rides v. renting? What are some thoughts on the best way to get the most enjoyment out of this trip?

No problem! Rent. Check out Mountain Bike Heaven (good shop) and Bike and Bean (convenient shop).

I'd recommend you buy the map at Mountain Bike Heaven and just cut loose. There is no such thing as a bad trail, thereabouts. Some are way over-the-top but hey, it's Sedona, what'd you expect.

Some trails turn into wilderness, and you get big tickets for riding there. Pay attention to that detail, and really that's about all you need to know!

I will also be out in N. Arizona and Sedona area towards the end of March. I will probably be picking up the "Mountain Biking Arizona Guide: Fat Tire Tales & Trails" book, but I was wondering what are your favorite trails out there that you recommend me to ride. I cant wait!!

That's a good book. Cosmic Ray has a great outlook on the trails!

As usual, without knowing what kind of rider you are I'm not going to say too much. I usually recommend "don't call me when you fall off the cliff and die" trail, but I'm feeling nice today. :)

Down around Bell Rock is pretty pedestrian. Nice warmups.

Submarine Rock trails are lots of fun. There's one surprise drop (about 5') that's completely doable, and that's a good thing because you're probably going to bomb into it and leap or die.

Cathedral Rock might be my favorite. Difficult in places, but good slickrock riding! Crowded on weekends.

Secret Wilderness is a riot.

Remember, look out for hikers on blind corners, and wilderness areas are taboo! (but Secret Wilderness is a name for the area, not the same as a wilderness area... if you aren't confused yet I'll keep trying)
