Synopsis of Ride:Awesomely Bonkalicious and incredibly Beautiful. I was feeling good in the morning and was lucky enough to run into some friends who let me tag along with their tandem group. It was fast, windy and I took a few too many turns at the front. As usual I neglected to eat or drink properly in the first 60 miles resulting in me popping at about mile 75.

Synopsis of Ride:
Hooked up with the Saturday ROCO group, rode out to Lake Casitas, and then headed up to Ojai and a few miles of the 33. I fell of the group as soon as the climb got steep (but not before some others), then turned around when I saw them coming back down. Back in SB, rode through Hope Ranch after a quick stop for water with Marco and Croykey. Marco is helping me train and wanted me to get in some hard hill efforts after a long hard day in the saddle. I had a hard time getting over threshold...

Altitude Climbed: 2,219 according to Garmin
Weather conditions: Nice, cool morning, warming up to mid-80s by the time I finished. Light wind.
Synopsis of Ride: Wanted to get my century in this weekend, so decided Easter was the perfect day for it. Light traffic, good weather and no family obligations. I did this one completely solo, no hubby for part of it, so did at my own (slow) pace and totally enjoyed it. I've had so many things going on this month that my longest ride had been about 40, so I was afraid this would be tough. Well, it was tough, but in a good way. :)
Another ride in two parts for my century-a-week. I already got a single-shot 100+ mile in for March yesterday, so its ok.

Weather conditions: Warm; calm
Synopsis of Ride:
1) I left very early for the worlds ride, and all around the mission & riviera hills before going to the bath house. Several pros including Aaron Olson showed up and the pace was brutal, at least to me and after my hard efforts yesterday. At the construction on the 192 past the high school, we went through the surrounding neighborhood, which was good for a little break, but the pace resumed on the other side and I fell off by the fire station & lyons club park. I was close enough to watch everybody turn up goob, but I just continued on straight to the 150 with a few others and did bates instead. Most everyone else from our little group stopped at the regroup spot or fell off, so it ended up being me and one other. I ended up pulling him all the way to bates and partway up, and then he just rode around me and left me to come in second... The way back was not as fast but still hard. After Northstar, I rode some more hills per Mark's advice and tried to get in some hard efforts but was pretty exhausted and Bill easily rode away from me. I spent about 15 min in Z1, 1:15 each in Z2, Z3, & Z4, and 8 min in Z5 for an avg of 138 and a max of 182.
2) I lounged around at home for a little while, watched some of the F1 race, then took off for a ride with Kim, also serving as a recovery ride... We rode downtown to Beachbreak, but it was closed so we went to Sambos for lunch. Then we rode out to Montecito, up to Mountain Drive, and back on foothill. Kim had a few incidents, but it was a fun ride and I got some good recovery in, feeling much better now than before. I spent about an hour each in Z1 & Z2, 5 min in Z3, and 45s in Z4 for an avg HR of 102, and a max of 158, compared to 138 earlier and 145 yesterday.
I tried to take a picture of us together, this is the best I could do...

Weather conditions: clear, 53-65 fahrenheit, gusty wind starting mid-morning
Synopsis of Ride:
Beautiful chill morning; no great pace for first leg (lack of sleep/ caffeine mismanagement) Steady climb past DWP hydroelectric plants and Castaic dam generating station. First peak was just enough incentive to keep going. Better after first ride break; riding past Lake Elizabeth was nice but gusty. More climbing up and over to Lancaster where the poppys are bloomin' everywhere! Eastbound we have a great taiwind; 35MPH w/o pedaling! Poppy reserve in full bloom. Just a brief stop (to smell the flowers?) and more eastbound with southern jogs ( _W _I _N _D) back up and over to Lake E. On to Bouquet Canyon via Spunky Canyon; nice break at a local market and on to the final leg. More windy sections and a great spin down and around Bouquet reservoir. Then pace yourself for wind and flattish ride back to cars in Valencia. On the way back home I lapped Balboa park in the SFV to round out the ride.

Weather conditions: Hot; calm
Synopsis of Ride:
1) Since I had skipped out on Punchbowl I figured I had to get some good training in, so I did the ROCO ride instead of the Echelon ride, and went around the lake and back up the coast. I had never been up the coast with that group, but heard stories about the pace and was wondering what I was getting myself into. I was holding on just barely on some stretches of PCH and the 101, and when we hit Bates I just watched them ride away. I caught up with Ben at the top when we hit the 150 and he towed me most of the way back to the group. The pace never really “settled” like worlds does on the way back through Summerland, so when the group charged up Ortega Hill I took the opportunity and shortcut them on the bike path. I thought I would come out just ahead of right in the middle of them, but I hit full gas and manged to get out way ahead, enabling me and one other guy to easily make it past San Ysidro before the group caught up with us.
2) I did chores around the house all day, then got out right as the sun was going down for an easy spin around town to dial in my race setup for sunday's crit. Edit: I admit I made this ride just a little longer than I may have otherwise just to get over 100 :P

The day started off cool and overcast, but not cold. The sun came out as I rolled into the Camarillo Valley. It warmed up through the afternoon, but was never too hot. It was a great ride.

Weather conditions: HOT, HOT, HOT! Around 100 back in toward Ramona and Poway, very little wind in that area, what wind there was was also HOT! And that 100 is measured in the shade! :twitchy:
Synopsis of Ride: Started out about 6:30 with a group of us from the desert. Weather was great for about the first 2 hours, then as we got inland and started climbing it started heating up. I have a cold as well, so this was a very tough ride for me. Never have I seen so many people just hang around the SAG stops, enjoying the shade. Plenty of food and drink and most importantly, ice, at those stops this year. When we finally started heading back toward the coast, the breeze cooled down considerably. All in all, a nice ride (I can say that now that it's over :D)

Avg. Speed: 16.1

Weather conditions: Cold in the morning, warmer throughout the day
Synopsis of Ride: Intended to take it easy before a race on Sunday but got caught up in group dynamics and ended up going harder at times. Went out to El Capitan also for some reason. After returning home, went out again with Kim for our weekly "Pancake Ride". In the evening I did a bunch of laps around the neighborhood to dial in my TCR after swapping out the crankset, and prepping my Tarmac for the race. I admit I did a few extra laps to tick over 100 miles, since I was so close.
Note that this makes 10 now for the year. The last one didn't seem to get counted.
Next weekend I'll be doing back-to-back centuries for our club's "county ride". I can almost write the report now... It was cold and foggy when we started, but clear and getting warmer after going over the pass and dropping into the valley. We regrouped a bunch and had lunch at the Fess Parker Winery. We had a nice paceline going down Foxen and then regrouped again after waiting for a bit at the top of Tempesquet. After a nice descent, we turned onto the 166 and had a tailwind push us the rest of the way into the Buckhorn. Much nicer than the headwind we had last October. Sunday we started out pretty mellow but the pace picked up after turning onto the 33 and the group broke apart before regrouping at the Ozena fire station. We all cruised up the climb to Pine Mountain summit (5000 feet) and regrouped again at the top. We tried to stay together on the rollers along the top but the group broke up again and we did a final regroup at the turnout to Rose Valley. The 12 mile descent to Ojai is breathtaking, and my favorite part of the ride, and although there were some minor regroups along the way it was mostly small groups from this point to the end at Peets, where I had a nice refreshing Green Tea Freddo.

Total Time: 6:52:25
Avg. Speed: 18.6
Altitude Climbed: 6,343 (Edge 305, reported by SportTracks)
Weather conditions: raining, cold, windy
Synopsis of Ride: It was cold and wet when we started, but clear and getting warmer after going over the pass and dropping into the valley. We regrouped a bunch and had lunch at the Fess Parker Winery. We had a nice paceline going down Foxen, but when we turned onto Tepesquet, the road was washed out so we had to detour around through Sisquoc. After we crossed the river and turned off Foxen, the headwind was brutal. We took it fairly easy up the climb at first, but near the end it was just me, Mark and John, and I took off a few corners from the top. We regrouped at the top of Tepesquet and had some food, then did the descent, my favorite part of the day. I was rocking out on my ipod to a techno mix of a Sarah McLachlan song. Another regroup at the bottom, then we turned onto the 166 with mixed winds (mostly cross) the rest of the way into the Buckhorn. Kim pulled the train for the first 15 miles or so, then Mark and I pulled a bunch with Kim mixed in some more. About 10 miles from Cuyama, I was pulling and Kim came from behind me and flew off the front; I jumped on his wheel and a minute or so later I realized that only Mark came with me and nobody else was in sight. We rotated for a while but the pace and effort was high and after a few minutes I was just holding on. When we got to New Cuyama, Mark and I went to the Buckhorn, and Kim went back to collect Jane. We didn't know how long it would take for Mondo to come with out stuff, so we walked over the store to get some calories. As we were coming out, we saw everyone else streaming in.

Weather conditions: raining, cold, windy
Synopsis of Ride: It was raining when we woke up, and we were in no hurry to get started, hoping that it would clear or at least stop coming down before we rolled out. Unfortunately, it did not, so we started out pretty mellow and mostly stayed together to the Ozena fire station. Kim, Jane, and Shawn (sp?) started early up the climb and the rest of us rolled out a few minutes later. After a little warmup, I kicked up my effort to a high tempo and rode away from everyone, eventually catching Shawn, and then Kim and Jane before reaching Pine Mountain summit (5000 feet). I know that Kim wanted to take off after me (and he could have kicked my ass), but he restrained himself and stayed with Jane. The 12 mile descent from the Rose Valley turnout to Ojai is breathtaking, and my favorite part of the ride, especially with Kim pulling us all down. There was a moment of confusion as we hit some road construction and had to all stop very suddenly for a one-way traffic control; 40-0 in a very short amount of time. We stopped in Ojai for burgers, and then rolled back into town around Lake Casitas.

Synopsis: Started out riding to the group ride which is about 10 miles solo. Met up with them and rode that for 30miles or so then on my way back home I met up with another friend and decided to ride with him for a while. Turns out he was doing another 45 so I ended with about 95. Rode out a little father and then around the block a few times to complete. Had to stop at a 7-11 at mile 85 because I ran out of food (was not planning a ride this long), but other than that, no stops and a great ride.

Synopsis of Ride: Thought I might be tired from the back-to-back 100+ mile days on Saturday and Sunday so headed out from home not sure what group I would join. Felt good so met up with an earlier group going for a long ride to Santa Paula. Didn't bring enough food, apparently still not recovered from the other rides, and ended up buying a lot of food along the way. Still felt ok on the climbs out of Casitas, but started to feel really fatiguied as I approached Montecito, and by the time I got home it was all I could do to crawl into bed.

Synopsis of Ride: I only had Friday off from work this week, so I figured I may as well get in my June century (I like going for it early just in case...). Started out about 5:30 am to try and beat the heat. There was hardly any wind. This is good, since it seems like the wind has been blowing constantly all spring! Was able to keep a nice steady pace. The weather was getting pretty warm by the time I finished. Probably around 100 degrees.

There was a lot more stopping than I would have liked, but thats what happens when you are in a group. We regrouped a lot. Note, I did basically the same ride back in April.

Did the lake ride from ROCO in the morning. It was a good sized group and we averaged I think nearly 21mph for the loop around the lake. Two people got flats so we had to stop and wait for them. Some people started rolling off before the first was done and someone from that group got the second flat, so not everyone from the first group that stayed back waited for the second group... The whole ride from door to door was 19.8mph with 33:00 stopped time including the flats.
After returning home, went out again with Kim for our weekly "Pancake Ride". After breakfast we rode out to the edge of carp and then she stopped at her office to work for the rest of the day, and I rode home.

Did Worlds in the morning. Ended up skipping Goob; I nearly changed my mind but it was too late. Ended up riding away from the group that went straight and was the first up Bates by several minutes. Of course had the obligatory stop at Northstar for drinks and conversation.
After returning home, went out again with Kim for another "Pancake Ride". After breakfast she wanted to see the Worlds route, so I had to do it all over again with her... On the way back, she stopped at her office to work for the rest of the day again, and I rode home.

Rode out for the 7AM roco ride, expecting to go around Lake Casitas. Turns out they only do that on Thursday--on Tuesday they do a warmup and meet the 8AM roco ride, which does the Worlds route. I led the charge up "the wall" on Goob, but took it easy up Bates. Nearly won the polo field sprint on an early flyer, but was reeled in by a local pro and he launced someone around me right before the sign.
Then met teammates for the noon "hammerfest" in Goleta, known jokingly as the "Goleta P/1/2" road race. Many of the hammers were missing and it was more mellow than usual, but I was still tired from the morning and stupidly tried to answer a call from Kim after I was dropped and wasn't able to jump back on after the turnaround. doh.
Met another teammate, a climbing freak genetic mutant, in the evening after work and we did Old San Marcos and Painted Cave. We caught up with another guy at the top of Old San Marcos and we ended up also doing Stagecoach twice. All-in-all, a very hard day.

I'll edit this with a full report later, but the short of it was that I missed Eric (who I rode with last year) in the parking lot by 2 minutes, then had to fix my cleats and it was 6:15 when I started, so I was chasing most of the way. I rode 80 miles by myself until I ran into Eric at the third stop in Moorpark. I rode with him and a few others until he flatted in Santa Paula, and then with Shprung and DScott (his first double) for about half of the climb out of Santa Paula until I accidentally rolled away from them. A little later I was still kinda crusing, still thinking in my mind I would soft-pedal at the top and wait for them, when I get passed by guy like I was standing still. This was the first person all day to catch me from behind, so I thought what-the-heck and jumped on his wheel. He and his riding partner and I pacelined down the 150 after the summit until I lost them on the descent down the Denison Grade. I found them at the lunch stop in Ojai and then we rode together the rest of the way. It's a good thing too because I was having massive issues with cramping--both my stomach (which happens not infrequently), and my legs (which has never happened before). There were a few times on PCH in Malibu where my legs completely locked up and I had to stop and get off the bike and massage them until I could move them again. I had a few goals for the ride, I met some of them and not others. I wanted to do sub-11 hour riding time and sub-12 hour total time. I did 10:46 riding time, so less than 11 hours (yay!), but 12:43 total (boo). Both much faster than last year. Two flats, cramping, and waiting for others contributed to the total time overrun. When it was clear than I wasn't going to be done in under 12 hours, I set a goal in Carpinteria (60 miles out) of finishing before 7PM. We rolled in at 6:59, so yay again!
By my rules, double centuries count for two centuries in the century-a-week accounting.
To help keep count, this is number 19
The year is almost half over and I'm 36% of the way there. So, a little behind, but I will likely do more long rides training for Everest Challenge, and at the end of the year as base. Note that I'm not doing these rides for my century a week specifically, I just like doing them. I know I should work more on my high intensity training, but I am doing that too and still getting faster and stronger, although maybe not as quickly as I would otherwise. I'm still riding a lot less than last year and I've been cut my mileage leading up to races.

Name of organized ride or route: La Jolla to Dana Point and back

Altitude Climbed: 4000 per altimeter - mostly rollers
Weather conditions: Overcast starting out - sunny from mid-morning on. Constant headwind for 55 miles going north. The wind died down some in the PM but I still had some tailwind.
Synopsis of Ride:Last chance for a June century. A nice uneventful ride. I visited my brother briefly in Dana Point and went to check out Revo Cycles which is billed as a bike shop/espresso bar. Nice bike shop, but as an espresso bar it is the fail. No food (empty display case), no one manning the espresso bar, no customers drinking anything. I had lunch at a taco shop instead.

Synopsis of Ride: Awesome, except for getting lost and having to use Balcom Canyon to get back on track. It was nice and cool in the A.M. and started to get a little warm as we rolled up on 12:00. By that time though we we're making our way back to the beach so it was never too bad. It was unusually humid though. I rode with some great riders and we kept the pace strong.
