Ride Time: 7:73:03

Altitude Climbed: 6,289 (Edge 305, reported by SportTracks)
Weather conditions: hot and hotter
Synopsis of Ride: Met with an Echelon group to do the two Casitas Pass climbs. Didn't continue around the lake, but instead rode back to SB with Kelly (visiting from CO, whom I met on the Grand Tour) and partway up Gibraltar. He had to get back to his wife so we cut it short. After returning back to the house where we were staying because of the fire evacuation, Kim decided that she wanted to spend the night at her parents, so I met her for lunch at Beachbreak Cafe, then rode out to Thousand Oaks via Potrero.

Altitude Climbed: 5,763 (Edge 305, reported by SportTracks)
Weather conditions: pleasantly warm
Synopsis of Ride: Started Worlds, but had some issues with my FD and stopped at the regroup to fix it. Kelly wanted to go around the lake and I wasn't finished with my FD when everyone took off so I went with him. After returning I hung out at Northstar with him and then went to FasTrack to watch the end of the tour stage while I waited for Kim to join me for lunch. Met her at Beachbreak for brunch, then rode around the Riviera and Montecito with her. She wanted to do lots of climbing, so I tried to string together as many uphill sections of the area as I could without backtracking or crossing on our route. We had a fun loop but it was getting late and she was getting tired so we headed to where she parked the car and drove home.

Date of Ride: July 12, 2008 (http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/6227974)
Type of Ride: Mixed (about 65 miles in a group)
Name of organized ride or route: Sisquoc Road Race "Practice" (with transit)
Actual Mileage: 124.89
Ride Time: 7:00:48
Total Time: 9:34:50
Avg. Speed: 17.8
Altitude Climbed: 9,572 (Edge 305, reported by MotionBased)
Weather conditions: started foggy by my house, but once I climbed over the mountains it was warmer in the inland valley, and got very hot (near 100) by the end. Calm in the morning, windy (mostly head/cross) on the ride home.

Synopsis of Ride: Rode out 30 miles over San Marcos Pass to Los Olivos to meet an Echelon valley ride to preview next week's Sisquoc course. After leaving home, I decided I wanted to see the lowest effort I could do Old San Marcos in with a time under 20 minutes (8% average, 1,200 ft gain in 2.9 miles - note that many people can't even do this climb in under 20 minutes) so I hit the lower sections fairly easily. Maybe a little too easy, as I eventually realized I wouldn't make time unless I picked up the pace. I gauged the remaining effort nearly perfectly, and finished in 19:54 with an average HR of 152 and a max of 167 (my LT is 165). I wanted to average over 20mph on the rollers after descending Stagecoach, so I made sure to keep my effort at a mid-aerobic level (142 average) and hit my goal with 20.2. I had allowed myself plenty of time to get to Los Olivos, so I of course was quite a bit early. Everyone else was getting dressed & prepped, and I was already ready, so I went over to a coffee shop around the corner to get a bagel & lox sandwich.

We rode out to the course fairly uneventfully, although the pace was difficult for many of the riders, so we had to regroup many times. Once to Sisquoc, we did two laps, starting and ending at the Sisquoc store. Sprinted at the "real" s/f line both laps, but went too early the first time. The second time I stuck to Bill's wheel, and Sean jumped too early but I follwed him. He faded and I passed him. On the remainder of the lap, Bill attacked before the turn onto Orcutt-Garey, and I tried to bridge but I waited too long and let myself get swallowed back up by the group. I "attacked" on the whoop-de-doo and gave Bill another run but he was able to hold me off, and I fairly easily held off the rest of the group. We regrouped at the store and weren't sure if we were waiting for the women or not. It was not clear whether or not they were doing one lap or two. After maybe 20 minutes, we figured they had already left, so we started back at a fairly leisurely pace. Eventually there were some "attacks" but Bill and I held the pace steady and eventually reeled them back in. We regrouped at the top of Foxen and got a call from the women that they were back in Los Olivos.

Back in Los Olivos for lunch, I got a smoothie at the coffee shop from the morning, and then met everyone at Panino. We all hung out for a while, but eventually I had to leave for the ride back home. My legs took a while to get going again, and I could feel that I was a bit (ok a lot) dehydrated. The rollers were really hard on me, but the final climb was ok, despite the persistent strong headwind (it was actually somewhat of a refreshing breeze, since it was so fricken' hot). When I got home I weighed myself and had lost about 7 pounds

Weather conditions: started out 64 degrees and warmed up to 93 with an avg of 77.7
Synopsis of Ride: Decided to do my first century on my fixed gear. Started from home to meet up with the group 16 miles away. This ride heads south through Irvine to hook up with Laguna Cyn then heads north on PCH to Warner Ave in Huntington Beach for the turn around. Don't ask me why they named it Seal Beach Century because it doesn't even enter that city. The route is basically an out n back with the exception of after the Laguna Cyn climb it heads to the north of Irvine to Portola then back down Hicks Cyn bike trail to the finish at Food Park.

Weather conditions: 40's in the A.M. to Mid 90's in the Afternoon back down to 60's after the hail storm.
Synopsis of Ride: This was by far the best organized, best supported ride I've been on ever. The vibe was completely different than what I'm used to. The climbing was moderate to difficult and the views were incredible. I made it to the top of Carson Pass at about 4:45 and as we were getting ready to leave a hail storm hit. We were stuck for about 15-25 minutes. The descent was fast despite the rain and hail. This was an incredible ride!

Corey,

I thought that was you when I stopped to talk to Russell at TurtleRock. I was the guy in the Club Hypoxia jersery. Great ride, except for the rain, I think you missed most of it though. I was 1/2 hour behind you and we rode in the rain and hail from about 1/2 below Pickett's Junction to the top, from that point on it pretty much rained steadily up until about 1/2 below the summit.

My wife was waiting at the summit to take pictures, and when it started to hail, she drove down to find me, and offer me my rain jacket. She found me about 3/4 of a mile below the summit. At that point I was soaked to the bone, I had already been riding in the rain for the better part of an hour. At least I had my rain jacket for the descent.

Yea, we were at the summit on Carson when the hail started, and when it died down we started our descent. We did get caught in the second phase of it though, the rain and spitting hail on the way down. I had dropped my cold weather gear earlier in the day so I got pretty soaked. Sounds like you got the brunt of the hail storm as you were coming up though! Oh well, it just makes for better stories!!!

Ride Time: 5:53:04
Total Time: 6:05:19

Weather conditions: started cold & foggy by my house, cleared up over the pass but was still foggy in the valley. Warmed up along the coast on the way home. In the evening it was clear and warm but not hot.

Synopsis of Ride: Rode up OSM to 154 and over the pass, down Stagecoach and back around to 154, 246 to Solvang, then the back roads through Alisal & Nojoqui Falls back to the 101. Entire ride was non-stop. My hand was swelling from being stung by a yellow jacket the previous day and the rough roads were somewhat painful, especially descending in the drops. I made good time, 1:30 to 246 and 1:45 to Solvang. Had a slight tailwind on the way back on the 101, and together with the draft off the cars, my average speed was nearly 24 mph for the 24 miles to Goleta. This ride by itself was 67.6 miles in 3:36, for 18.8mph average, solo.

In the evening I rode out and met the usual Thursday evening ride. Everyone was hoping I would be tired from Solvang, but I had plenty of energy and was not sore and charged up most of the climbs. It was a great ego-boost to hear "oh crap, there goes Steve" when I started riding off the front on a climb. Overall it was only our second fastest time for the ride, I guess without Bill there to push me I slacked off...

Ride Time: 5:18
Total Time: 5:58
Avg. Speed: 19.3
Altitude Climbed: 4,958 (Edge 305, displayed on unit)
Weather conditions: Warm & Warmer

Synopsis of Ride: Rode out to ROCO ride, fast pace to climb. I was feeling good and worked up front to chase some attacks. Tried to bridge once but failed. Rode 4th wheel behind Cody, Mark, and Gary up the last rise of 192 to the 150 and all the way to the base of the climb. That was probably the hardest I've ever ridden, and I didn't have a chance to recover, so I was pretty much shot for the climb. I fell off the front group and rode near LT to the top top of the pass, catching and riding with a few others that were shelled as well (note that there were many people behind me). After regrouping at the top, we cruised down to the lake and around to Ventura, and then got on the Cody train on PCH and the 101 back to Carp. We were flying at 26-30 when he would pull and the speed would drop 2-3mph when he pulled off. Fortunately he took long turns at the front and everyone else took short turns, so he pulled us most of the way. There was a flat right past the Seacliff exit, so we had to wait for that, and then we got going and hammered the 101 section, most of the way over 30. From carp the rest of the way in, the speed was pretty civil. I took a long pull from the edge of carp to summerland.

By the time we were downtown, most of the people had turned off, and nobody wanted to stop at Northstar, so our small group cruised up state st, and then turned onto Calle Real to Goleta. Cody was going to go up OSM and I decided to punish myself and join him. We stopped at Tucker's Grove park to fill up our bottles and then headed up. I stayed with him for the first mile but the rest of the ride started to catch up with me and I dropped back. By the time I hit the switchbacks I could barely pedal and managed to drag myself up to the top in about 19:45. Not a horrible time, but for the HR I was putting out, I should have done it 2 minutes faster. A sign that I was probably dehydrated.

When got down and were having a nice conversation so I rode past my house and ended up looping all around Goleta with him. I picked his brain about a lot of persistent BF topics, for the pro perspective on things. Riding on the path nearing home, two girls were selling lemonade on the adjacent street, so I stopped, turned around, and got some. With ice. I drank that and then poured the rest of the drink I got at the park into the ice, and drank that. I got home and weighed myself and had lost 7 pounds

I'm getting a little tired of doing a full writeup, so lets just say that on July 31 I did basically the same thing as July 24 and August 2nd did a similar ride as July 26, but with some extra climbing and more stops.

That makes 26, I'm halfway there and only a month behind...

Name of organized ride or route: Sunday Worlds, SB Tri route, OSM & part of Painted Cave
Actual Mileage: 103.45
Ride Time: 5:53:06
Total Time: 7:04:08
Avg. Speed: 17.6
Altitude Climbed: 6,265 (Edge 305, reported by SportTracks)
Weather conditions: Started out foggy and got hot later in the day.

Synopsis of Ride: Did Sunday Worlds. Felt good despite yesterday. Was tired, but still able to put in hard efforts. Did goob and stuck with the front group over the top and down to the 150, and all the way around to Bates. Felt like I wanted to die at the regroup. Got going again down the 192 and approaching the sprint a sheriff car pull out and blocks the road (people up front reported that he appeared to do it intentionally), almost causing us to stack up but nobody went down. Usual cruise back to Northstar to hang out. Bill said he was going to ride back out that way with Carlos and Kelly because she was going to do the triathlon, so I headed out with them. My legs felt dead and it took forever to warm them up. Just as they were feeling good again Kelly dropped her chain, or something, and it took us a while to get it sorted out. My the time we reached Toro my legs were working again and we cruised around the course, back out to goob, etc.

After getting home and sleeping and eating and doing a bunch of chores I got out again for 10 miles of climbing. I intended to go up OSM and Painted Cave and around Camino Cielo to the 154 and down, but I left home too late and ran out of light, so I cut PC short and jetted back down. Total time does not take into account the time that I was home, just the stopped time during the two rides. I was definitely tired from two days of hammering and just took the climbs at an easy steady pace.

Synopsis: Basically the same two rides as 7/31 and 7/24. Coming back from Solvang the winds were slightly more favorable than 7/31 but more of a cross than on 7/24. I was fatigued for sure and felt like I had no power coming back on the 101. I practically died when I got back to Goleta and limped into work. I was mostly recovered for the ride in the evening and still managed to push the pace a bit but trailed behind Bill most of the time.

Synopsis: Took the ROCO train out to Casitas, then forked off and climbed up the 33 alone to Rose Valley, then back over Casitas Pass, and wandered back to town through the foothills, and capped it off with Gibraltar to Camino Cielo and down Painted Cave/Old San Marcos. I was planning on doing one more climb for 15K total, but I was feeling dehydrated so I just cut across to my house. I had 7 bottles-worth of liquid, filling up at every opportunity and still lost 6 pounds :notamused: I ran out of water when I was almost near home, but honestly I can't imagine drinking any more than I did. Synopsis: Rode the 101 out to Refugio. Because it was a considerable amount of flat to get out there, I wanted to do it twice to make it worth it. I got pretty dehydrated yesterday, and since all of the roads are pretty remote (more so than yesterday) I took 3 bottles. Filled up 2 1/2 times so I had about 10 bottles-worth today and I STILL got dehydrated and lost about 5 pounds :notamused:. Again I had planned one more climb for 15K but cut it short as I felt I was doing more harm than good.

BTW, if you click on the link, the elevation profile of the first two climbs looks like something...

Name of organized ride or route: Saturday ROCO + Hwy 33 & Gibraltar
Actual Mileage: 127.90
Ride Time: 8:53:31
Total Time: 9:24:51
Avg. Speed: 14.4
Altitude Climbed: 12,209 (Edge 305, reported by SportTracks)
Weather conditions: Cool in the morning, hot the rest of the day
Synopsis: Same ride as 8/16, but slower, and more painful. Took the ROCO train out to Casitas, then forked off and climbed up the 33 alone to Rose Valley, then back over Casitas Pass, and wandered back to town through the foothills, and capped it off with Gibraltar to Camino Cielo and down Painted Cave/Old San Marcos. I completely bonked about 7.5 hours in and crawled over Gibraltar and Camino Cielo, and coasted down the last 10 miles or so, pedaling only when absolutely necessary...

Altitude Climbed: 10,838 (Edge 305, reported by SportTracks)
Weather conditions: Cool & foggy in the morning, hot the rest of the day
Synopsis: Met Ed and Mark at the base of Old San Marcos, rode up and over the pass with them, down Stagecoach and out the 154 to Armour Ranch Road, where we met Michael. Together the 4 of us rode up Figueroa Mountain from Happy Canyon and dropped down to Los Olivos. Michael pulled most of the way back to his car on the 154, where he stopped with Mark. Ed and I rode back on the 154, up Stagecoach and turned onto Camino Cielo to go up to the top of Painted Cave. He turned down toward home there but I continued up Camino Cielo to the repeaters to get some extra climbing and distance. Coming down I took the 154 instead of OSM to stretch out the distance and rolled into my driveway at exactly 100 miles :p

The weather was perfect, although the morning mist was causing my hoods to stay pretty wet the whole time. My Garmin took a crap 3 times on the ride, so I lost all my info. But regardless it was an awesome ride!

Ride Time: 6:10
Total Time: 7:40
Altitude Climbed: 4400 ft
Weather conditions: Mostly cool. Foggy, then sunny, foggy, then sunny, then...
Synopsis: This was my first time doing the Lighthouse. Just as when I did the Wildflower there were no wildflowers, this time there was no lighthouse, at least not one visible in all the coastal fog. I had a great time riding with various Socal folks, many of whom dropped me between rest stops. Cassave was presiding over the hurt train in his beootiful new handmade steelie. My only real criticism of this ride is that it is too far away. The organizers really need to do something about that.

Altitude Climbed: Who Can Say?

On an Indolent-style century one eats only fugu and drinks only absinthe throughout the ride. Knowing that absinthe isn't widely available I filled up my bottles at home, but I planned to hit the many sushi bars along the way for my fugu as it's hard to keep fresh in a jersey pocket.

Leaving the house around 8:30 the ride was initially uneventful but as I began to get hungry I realized that sushi bars don't open until lunch. Improvisation was in order. I stopped at an AM/PM market and determined that Vienna Sausages were the closest available substitute for fugu. You might think at first glance that they are very different, but the experience of eating Vienna Sausages has many of the same characteristics as fugu - especially the adrenalin rush of skirting disaster, and similar thoughts that rush into your head like:
Is my tongue getting numb?
Am I going to die?
What's that funky aftertaste?
I'm going to die aren't I?
Re-energized and still alive I continued on to Dana Point without incident. There I dined on excellent fugu as planned, visited my brother for a bit, then turned back for home. At this point the one drawback of drinking absinthe on a long ride came into play. Because it is only 30-40% water, you have to drink a lot of it to keep properly hydrated. As a consequence I remember almost nothing of my return trip. I know that at some point, probably in Oceanside, I somehow acquired a tattoo of Sarah Palin performing fellatio on Alan Greenspan on my left buttock. It's good work, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to regret that one. I surmise that somewhere in Del Mar I ate some improperly prepared fugu, as I am told that I collapsed paralyzed at the foot of Torrey Pines and was rushed to the hospital to have my stomach pumped. The silver lining in that is A) I don't remember it; and B) I avoiding having to climb Torrey Pines and still got my century in. Win-win.

All in all a great day. I'll let everyone know the next time I plan to do this in case anyone wants to join in.

Name of organized ride or route: Lake Casitas, Ojai, and Santa Barbara Foothills

Ride Time: 5:52:16
Total Time: 6:42:10
Avg. Speed: 17.7
Altitude Climbed: 5,800 (Edge 305, reported by SportTracks)
Weather conditions: Pleasant
Synopsis: Met the 8AM ROCO ride and cruised out to Casitas Pass at a fairly easy pace, rather than the hammerfest the ride typically is, thanks to the "off season". From the regroup at the top of the second climb, a subgroup voted to go to Ojai so we headed off and did a short loop to the close edge and back. The morons with "yes on 8" signs were out in force along the 150 so we shouted at them as we rode by. Nearing the lake on the way back I got a flat, and the group was just leaving the water stop after I fixed it. Back in Santa Barbara, I saw the group from another ride hanging out at the coffee shop so I stopped and hung out, then proceeded to cruise around the foothills with Bill. I wanted to make the ride 100 miles and I was a little short approaching home so I headed out to the university and looped back around.
