Actual Mileage: 100.32

Total Time: 6:01:17
Avg. Speed: 17.6
Altitude Climbed: 5,593 (Edge 305, reported by SportTracks)
Weather conditions: Wet
Synopsis: It had rained the night before and the roads were wet but the forecast looked clear. Met the ROCO group but there were only 6 of us. 3 of us were together over the first climb to Casitas, but we got separated from the other 3. We were soft-pedaling to wait for them but they were nowhere to be seen. It started pouring so we turned around to look for them and just kept going. Around Summerland we were out of the rain and we caught the others in Montecito. It was dry back in Santa Barbara and the skies looked sunny over Goleta so I rode through town and went out the other end, on the freeway to Circle Bar B, and home. When I got home I was close to 100 miles so I figured I would do laps around my neighborhood with some sprint tests.

Name of organized ride or route: 7AM ROCO ride around Casitas; Evening cruise home
Actual Mileage: 101.73
Ride Time: 5:23:12
Total Time: 5:28:44
Avg. Speed: 18.9
Altitude Climbed: 2,959 (Edge 305, reported by SportTracks)
Weather conditions: Cool in morning & evening, warm otherwise
Synopsis: Met the 7AM roco ride. It was a good sized group but the pace was more than a lot of people could handle apparently and by the time we were in Ventura the group seemed to be cut in half. By the time we were around the lake and back in Carp there were only a handful of us. I took a few good pulls here and there but the majority of the work was done by 2 or 3 guys. I had to be at work for an 11:30 meeting and rolled in right at 11; the ride was 82 miles. In the evening I took a longish route to get in a few more miles and put me just over 100. As it got dark I eased up and slowed down a bit for extra safety.

Avg. Speed: 18.9
Altitude Climbed: 3,403 (Edge 305, reported by SportTracks)
Weather conditions: Pleasant
Synopsis: Pace was fairly easy until somewhere around carpinteria, where a group has snuck away off the front. I bridged up to that group before they got too far away and was 4th to the top of the second climb. Overall the pace was pretty steady but there were a few burts of effort on the way back, especially along PCH when I was rotating at the front of the group with a few others to try to catch a group ahead, until I realized that it was kind of silly to be doing so much work, especially considering how much horsepower was sitting in in the group behind. Back in town I stuck with Marco, Cookie and Croykey through hope ranch, then after they turned off to home I continued around Goleta just a little further to tick over 100.
Looking at the power data is fun. My bridge effort was my peak 1m at 360W (5.7 W/kg) and an average speed of 31mph :)

Synopsis: Had the day off from work due to Veteran's Day. Met John, Derek, and Bill at 7:30 and we headed up OSM and the 154 to Santa Ynez, through Ballard and stopped at Los Olivos for lunch. I had a smoothie. We took Ballard Canyon to Solvang and Alisol to Najoqui and the 101 back to Goleta through Gaviota. We arrived back in Goleta at noon and thought it would be fun to find the noon Goleta hammerfest. They were coming down Glen Annie so we hooked on and did the rest of the ride, then continued to La Cumbre for lunch. After lunch I rode down to Kim's office to visit and she introduced me to several of her coworkers. Then I rode home after a quick stop at the LBS to check on my wheels.

Weather conditions: Don't remember
Synopsis: Typical saturday ROCO ride until we hit road construction at the top of the first climb. We waited about 5 minutes and were let through but not all the group was there yet, and the rest of the people got caught there and had to wait 10 minutes. At the top of the second climb we weren't sure if anyone else was coming, and although I wanted to go around the lake nobody else did, so I turned back with them. On the way down the climb, we saw the rest of the group. A few of them said they wanted to go around the lake. I looked back and nobody was behind me so I slowed to turn around. When I was nearly stopped, I heard a "don't stop" from behind me and a rider had slid into me. Didn't really affect me, but he had road rash on his thigh and cracked his helmet. He later told me he was watching the other group because he was worried someone would u-turn in front of him and didn't see me stopped off to the side of the road. After a few minutes to make sure he was ok (there were others that stopped with him), he continued down and I turned around and went around the lake with 3 others. We picked up one more close to the lake and he pulled us for a while until one of us got a flat. He waited, but after the next flat he just kept going... On one hand too bad to lose the engine of the train, but on the otherhand it was a lot of work keeping up with him! The rest of us went at a more casual pace back to town, and I did the thing were I loop around Goleta to pick up an extra 10 miles to put me over 100 for this silly century a week thing...

Synopsis: Lots of flats. Someone got a flat just outside of summerland, and we softpedaled to wait for them. I got a flat in Carpinteria, and a few people stayed with me and then we chased the group. Back together, we went fast on 101 and PCH and then cruised up the Ventura River Trail and Santa Ana road. The climbs were a good tempo pace and then we cruised back to SB. I did a little extra with Bill and Derek through Hope Ranch and then they turned back and I continued around Goleta to finish off. I was like 1 mile short so I did 2 laps of my neighborhood.

Synopsis: Visiting in-laws, wanted to do some different climbs around the Santa Monicas than usual... decided to look up the Mulholland Century route for ideas. It started in Agoura and was 110 miles; I was starting in Westlake, so I modified the route slightly by putting Stunt/Piuma up first and then looping around to Old Topanga/Malibu Canyon. I also cut out Pacific View/Deer Creek, mostly because I didn't want to be out as long, but also because I missed the turn. I was looking for Pacific View and forgot there was a connector road. Oops. I did the whole ride nearly non-stop, the only time I put my foot down was to stop at the Rock Store for about 3 minutes to get more drinks, and there was another 2 minutes of trackstanding at lights :p

Name of organized ride or route: Thursday morning Lake Ride + lunchtime OSM climb
Actual Mileage: 102.38
Ride Time: 5:33:29
Total Time: ~6 hours
Avg. Speed: 18.4
Altitude Climbed: ~4,371 (Edge 705, reported by SportTracks)
Weather conditions: Started cold and dark, finished sunny and warm
Synopsis: Trying to finish off this century a week thing, I figured I need to do some mid-week centuries if I want to "catch up". Thursday mornings there is a 7AM ride leaving from downtown that goes around Lake Casitas, in the opposite direction as on Saturday. I think I have it in this thread once or twice already. Anyway, I have to leave my house at 6:30 but sunrise isn't until 6:50, although by about 6:35 it was fairly light already... I did the low end of my SST range out to the meeting spot, ended up being one of the first ones there. More people eventually showed up and we headed out at a pretty easy pace to Carpinteria. A few women were with us and said they weren't going to try to keep up on the freeway section and were just going to out and back to Ventura. We did the freeway and PCH at a good clip but not overly fast. Actually the whole pace up and around the lake was great, very nice and steady for our small group (7). On the first descent after the pass some riders from the 8AM ride were coming up the climb and turned around and joined us back to SB. I wanted to hook up with the lunchtime climb later and was a bit early so I snaked through Hope Ranch and UCSB and cut across at Los Carneros to Cathedral Oaks and made a quick pit stop at home before meeting up with the noon group to do the climb.
This was supposed to be a big competition between two of the racers and I knew I was going to be tired and slow so I wanted to get up the road and watch them when they came past, but they ended up leaving right after me and flew past and I never saw most of them again except as dots in the distance. There were a few other slow-pokes with me but I eventually dropped off them too and came in last, with a time of 19:15. The leaders finished just over 15:00. I've done it in under 16:00 before and did 17:25 yesterday but today after 95 miles my legs just didn't want to go... but I should note that I maintained 245W for the climb, which is still at the low end of my SST zone so it wasn't horrible... Yesterday was 260W which is at the upper end.

Name of organized ride or route: Tour de Francis Castaic Three Lakes (http://sites.google.com/site/adobovelo/Home/official-rides/tour-de-francis-routes/castaic)
Actual Mileage: 102.6
Ride Time: 5:44:37
Total Time: ~6 hours
Avg. Speed: 17.86
Altitude Climbed: 9,600 (Edge 705 display)
Weather conditions: Started pretty cold, around 50, finished around 70; somewhat windy
Synopsis: Recommended this ride by "Big John", I met up with several BF'ers at Lake Castaic for this ride put on by the Adobo velo club. The ride started with a casual descent from the parking area to the lake entrance, followed by a longish climb up Lake Hughes Road into the Angeles National Forest. The pace started out casual enough with Keith getting ahead on the descent and I moved up to ride with him at the front. We started the climb at a nice easy tempo but then two Cynergy guys came up to the front and increased the pace to a high tempo (for me anyway). Keith said he wasn't going to ride hard and I decided to try to stay with the front so I went ahead with them, and when we got to the top of the climb nobody was around except 5 of us, the two Cynergies, a guy in a Jittery Joe's kit, and a little guy from Mira Mesa Cycling. I still wasn't sure how hard I wanted to go all day and the Cynergy guys were more than happy to push the pace for a while; they traded pulls and the three of us sat on. After we descended into the canyon we had a 12 mile gradual climb up to Lake Elizabeth where we all traded pulls more evenly, although the Cynergy guys took slightly longer pulls than the rest of us. At the rest stop I learned that the Mira Mesa guy was Rafael and the other three were all Johns.
After we checked in we quickly left the stop and that's where the ride got interesting, we took a wrong turn out of the stop and after a few minutes I was concerned we were going the wrong way. We passed the route sheet around but were not convinced until the road changed to the wrong name. So we stopped turned around and headed back. As we passed the rest stop again, the next group of riders were just about leave. We eased off the pace a little bit for a while but one of the Johns got a little bit ahead and the rest of us (well me anyway) were pushing hard to close the gap. Eventually we got to a long descent and Rafael "attacked". We were screaming down the descent and almost missed the next turn, but fortunately one of the volunteers yelled at us :thumb:
After the second stop we had a bunch more climbing with a few rollers at the top and then a descent to Quail Lake where the lunch stop was. We stopped there for maybe 10 minutes and left right as the next group was coming in. Rafael decided to wait for his friends and didn't leave with us, so it was just me and the Johns. I was chatting with one of the Cynergy Johns on the climb out of the lake and we didn't notice that we had gapped the other two. We got to the top and soft-pedaled for a while to let them catch up but eventually we just resumed a normal albeit somewhat casual pace, where we coasted/soft-pedaled down the descents and did tempo up. On the long climb after the "three points" stop (where Rafael had "attacked" on the way down), the John I was riding with was starting to have some difficulty so we eased up a bit. On the descent down toward Lake Hughes road he was bonking and I gave him a bar. Once on Lake Hughes road we had that 12 miles of descent which was nice, but I decided I wanted to try to get back in 6 hours so I pushed the gradual descent, going upwards of 30 for much of it. There were still several climbs and rollers after the descent, but from that corner back to the lake entrance I averaged nearly 23mph with over a thousand feet of climbing :)
Unfortunately the finish was back up the hill that we came down at the start so there was one more climb to finsh things off. I tempo'd up it and rolled into the parking alone. There were a few people that must have abandoned and one of the vounteers at his truck. "Oh you're back" he said :p
Over the next 20 minutes or so the other John's trickled in, then Vance and Keith and others. I cleaned up, enjoyed the food and stuck around for about 2 and half hours to watch others come in until I had to leave to head back to Santa Barbara for my company holiday party. Overall a fun day :D

Once on PCH it heads toward San Clemente to the first rest stop at Carls Jr. I had 50 miles at this point and decided to head home to get in early. A few riders turned back with me so we rode back to Irvine where we split and I was solo again. I did this on my fixed gear with a 53x17. There was one climb that hit 10% but it's only 0.3 mile long and my heart rate hit 195 but it wasn't that bad.

Synopsis: Did the usual 8am ROCO lake ride. A small group continued around the lake and everyone else turned back. Fortunately Cody stayed with us and helped pull into the headwind on PCH. I did a few rotations but was being blown all over the road and decided to stay back in the shelter of the pack. Rode back through Goleta with Todd, Seth and Mark... had a little spill at Turnpike when I hit a pothole and my chain came off  but I wasn't hurt except for some blood on my elbow and a bruise on my ass. After Mark turned off at Elwood, I rode back home on Cathedral Oaks.
Later in the afternoon I took my cross bike out to Elwood, did a few laps on the mesa and practiced dismounting and jumping back on. Fun stuff...

Synopsis: Lake loop again. Left the house in the dark at 6:30. It was about 35 degrees and I was wearing a heavier base layer than usual, arm & knee warmers, and a thermal vest, which I haven't worn since EC last year. I was ok for a while but in some places my hands went numb. My the time we did the climbs up to Casitas my hands had finally warmed up and they didn't give me trouble after that. Note that on thursday mornings the ride usually goes in the opposite direction as the satuday ride, down the coast instead of climbs first, but today for some reason we did the climbs first. The pace was relatively mellow the whole way except Chicken Ranch pushed a bit up the climbs, enough to shell everyone but me. We did a pretty fair trading of pulls on the way back up the coast and the ride was generally uneventful except for a few close calls with cars.

Synopsis: Left the house in the dark at 6:30 to meet the ROCO group at 7. I wore the thermal vest again and two layers of gloves, but it was warmer than last week and I unzipped my vest and removed a layer of gloves when I arrived. There were only a few of us and Dave suggested Eucalyptus Hill so that's where we went, and then met the 8AM ride along Cabrillo heading out. The pace was mellow most of the way until goob and then it was fairly fast. I made it to the top of the wall first and stayed near the front to the top of the false flat and then went backwards when it pitched down. I was OTB by the bottom of the hill and tried to bridge back up but was too far back and burned myself out, so I stopped a the regroup instead of doing the Bates loop too. The way back was inconsistent and a group got some separation off the front, I went to go close it and brought us back together, but that raised the pace and it was pretty much all out to the polo fields. I looped back to Goleta through Hope Ranch with a woman on break from UC Davis (Amy I think?) and then we parted and I continued the big loop around Goleta by myself. I got home around 11:20 so I hung out there for about half an hour and then rode out to meet the hammerfest. I was pretty tired so I was determined to not do too much work and suck wheel to stay on as long as possible. I made it about halfway up Glen Annie before I backed off but after the turnaround I stayed with the group the rest of the way and even worked into the rotation most of the time, since nobody really was pushing the pace too hard.
3 more left... it's supposed to rain for a few days I think. Cutting it close :notamused:

Synopsis: I'm not going to write a big synopsis here because I'm going to start a thread about it, but I had mapped out a bunch of climbs strung together based on suggestions from my "modified mulholland century" thread. I wanted to hit Deer Creek, Latigo, and Las Flores. The total distance 108 miles and the total climbing something like 14,000 feet. Somewhere along the way I decided I didn't feel like pushing myself that hard and decided to cut out Las Flores. My route was otherwise the same but from the top of Piuma instead of heading down Tuna and looping around to Las Flores then finishing down Stunt, I just shortcut all that and went down stunt. Partly because I didn't want to add the extra distance and climbing, but even more because I'm just not comfortable descending on my tricross, even with road wheels & tires. The braking just doesn't work as well and it doesn't really like to lean into corners like my Tarmac. Of interest, is that my rear tube blew out right after I turned onto Yerba Beuna from Cotharin, and as I was finishing fixing it a cyclist came by, asking if I had everything. I did but as I was just finishing, I asked where he was going, and seeing as how we were both going to the bottom of Encinal, we rode together. Also of note was that I was going to try to meet up with KiddSisko, but he called while I was just starting up Piuma and told me he wasn't going to be able to make it.

Synopsis of Ride: The last century of 2008. This was a simple out and back to San Clemente, but it was probably my worst, wimpiest, ignominious century to date even though I did actually finish. No energy, no legs, no self esteem. Near the end I limped up Torrey Pines at 5mph  Not enough riding and too much eating takes it's toll.
Time to HTFU in 2009.

Synopsis: To complete my 20,000 mile goal last year, I rode up to Los Olivos for lunch. I thought it would be fitting to replicate the ride to finish my 2008 goal. I posted my intentions on Facebook looking for riding partners and got some interest. The ride quickly took on a life of it's own and started shaping up to epic proportions. The least of which was the impressive invite list. Unfortunately, most people weren't interested in such an epic ride, so there were only a handful of people at the 8AM coffee shop start. Ironically, I had to ride across town to get to the start, and then backtrack and go back the other way on the ride, so I actually have another 8 miles or so that I didn't include here...
We had one "casualty" before we even started, a broken derailer cable... so she just went home instead of joining us. One guy forgot his water bottles so we altered our route through town to go by his house, and as a result one person that was trying to meet us, missed us, which we did not find out about until later... We picked up one more on the bike path in Goleta and when we hit the 101N there were 7 of us. One guy turned off to climb up Refugio and the only woman with us turned around just before Gaviota, so 5 of us went through the tunnel. It was a tight fit as always, and without much room to maneuver we had to run over some crap on the tiny shoulder. Shortly after the tunnel we got a call that one guy was chasing and we decided to wait at the top of the climb at the turnoff from the freeway. And, since we were going to have to wait anyway, we took the climb very easy. After waiting about 13 minutes at the top, we continued to Solvang with a total now of six.
Three stopped in Solvang and Carson, John (jmechy), and I continued on to Los Olivos to pick up some sandwiches before continuing up the mountain. The idea was to have a little picnic and eat them at the top :) We ran into Aaron Olson at Panino in Los Olivos, he was doing the exact opposite route as us ;) We were going to meet one more, Gene (LT Intolerant), in Los Olivos but we were later than he expected and he went up ahead of us. After we got our food and started on the long false flat to the base of the real climb, John commented that he was worried his HR was higher than it should be. When we got to the climb, I had to go ahead because I was running much higher gearing (39x26) compared to their compacts, and had to go faster to keep my cadence up on the extremely steep sections. I did 2.7 miles & 1200 feet for 20 minutes before running into a friend coming down, so I stopped to chat and wait for the others. Carson came by a few minutes later and John after about 8 minutes. Did another 2.6 miles & 1100 feet for20 minutes and ran into Gene coming down, so I stopped and chatted and waited again for 9 minutes. Gene then continued back up with us and I did the last 3.7 miles & 1300 feet to the summit.
I spent about 20 minutes total at the summit, we ate and then continued down the backside. I haven't been very good descending lately and combined with my hands being very cold I really took my time, and Carson was waiting for a few minutes at the bottom. It took me slightly over half an hour to do the 10 mile descent, which included 3/4 mile uphill and maybe a mile of gravel & hardpack dirt. We had a nice easy cruise mostly downhill on Happy Canyon Road to the 154 and then 10 miles on 154 to Stagecoach. I did a nice steady pace pulling nearly the whole way on 154 trying to get John home, then a nice easy paced climb up Stagecoach. John seemed to be feeling better but we were still counting down the road markers to the top. Carson stopped to pee at the top while we waited for John (I've never seen someone pee so many times on one ride!), and then it was downhill all the way to home. It was getting late and cold and the final descent into the foothills brought us down into fog and by the time I got home I was a popsicle.
Pictures to follow. Overall it was a very easy casual ride. I was going to do another 110 mile ride today (1/1) but my rear derailer quit about 14 miles in :notamused:

Not broke. It quit.

Fixed it ;)

Have I mentioned how stupid of an idea that was? It would not have been too difficult but for the racing and the broken collarbone... :innocent:
Edit: I didn't even need the partial credit for lighthouse... although I'm glad I crafted my rules to allow multiple rides in the same day. I also did make use of the "24 hour period" loophole and the double-century-double-counting caveat. A little later I'll post some combined stats.

* 9/21 was the second day of everest, and I used the descent from the first day as "credit" for the second, as it was within 24 hours...

Congrats to all who reached their goal (especially umd)! :thumb:
Who's up to the challenge for 2009? I don't mean the riding, I mean organizing and updating the C-A-M Challenge thread?
Dan? You did a fine job...
