Somewhere in this forum I read that 23c and even 25c tires would not seat properly on this rim because of it's (Dyad) width and that a 28c was a better fit.

I'm in the latter stages of a tandem build and really never gave tires a second thought.

Total team weight will be about 270 lbs (w/70 lb. stokid).

I'm looking real close at Continental's GP 4 Season in a 28c.

Could I run a 25c?

Currently there are 23c on the rims now but it has never touched asphalt. They're fully aired up and seated on the Dyads.

Thanks

It's my belief that the Dyads are too wide to safely accommodate a 25 much less a 23. If memory serves, the Dyads are 23 or 24 mm wide. You need a 19-20 mm rim for 23's or 25's. A Velocity Fusion or a Deep-V would suit. I think that the Dyads are specified for touring anyway and you generally run wider tires in that application. 28's should work fine on the Dyads.

My opinions arise from experiences I've had with narrow tires on wide rims. Other folks probably will differ.

I have Dyads on my tandem right now. 25,000 miles and they are still in excellent shape. I sent an e-mail to Velocity a couple years ago, asking them about running 25's or 23's. Their response was a recommendation not to go less than 28, particularly with a tandem.

I ran 25's on mine all year. 1000 miles with a 75 lb child stoker. I may have to rethink. I'm looking for something with less weight anyway, just built up some fusions for my single, I might build some for the tandem.

25/28 is definitely the "edge" for Dyads. At this point, you have to start comparing particular tires, since different brands and models will have slightly different dimensions under the "25" label.

Personally, I wouldn't flirt with 23s on a Dyad.

Good point. We run Gatorskins which I think are on the wide side.

Thanks everybody, I picked up a pair of Conti GP 4 Season in a 28c. They may not be as svelte as a set of 23s or 25s but they're a safe bet and I'll bet a little quicker than the Specialized Hemisphere Armadillos in a 1.95" width on our mtn bike/trail-a-bike combo we're used to. Thanks again for the help.
