Well it looks like post from yesterday is gone. I was hoping it would get under the wire as it were. I have been doing a lot of searching for a cheap bike that will get me introduced to the world of dh. My HT has been killing me lately so I decided to bite the buillit ;)...I found a good deal on a bighit comp 2002 which I decided to pickup. For around 1200american I got the complete bike. This is new and not used so I still get the warranty.
I will post pics when the bike arrives next week. Thanks for everyone help :) Next big purchase is a new fork cause I don't want to ride a pinner sc anymore, especially dh.

Speaking of BigHIts. Does everybodys bighits' suspension squeek a lot? I love my bike but I can't stand the squeek squeek every pedal stroke. I sound like a cheep motel bed.

A lot of dually's do. I don't know if this one does. Come to Whistler sometime and just listen to the music of the high end bike. Between the suspension squeaking, hubs going high speed (72 engagement points sounds awesome) and the plastic sounds clothing you get quite a few interesting sounds at the base of the mountain :D...
BTW have you done any servicing to the bearings or anything? That might fix it up.

NO. I just got the bike a couple of weeks ago and have seriously rode it maybe 6 times. It seems like the more I ride it the louder the squeeks get. Oh yah, also watch the cable housing rub on the head tube. Mine already rubbed thru the paint.

I actually had a creaking in the headtube of my P3 from a broken tack weld. But since that particular weld was only there to hold the down tube to the head tube in order to fold the top tube over and then weld, it's not a structural warranty issue. The specialized rep suggested I use some linseed oil to quiet the creak, and so far it's worked. try that on you'r squeaky parts and post up results. FYI you have to let the linseed oil dry before using it, or it may not work right. It takes about 12-18 hours.

Yo mael,
Its about time. Now we have 2 of the same bikes.....a roast, and a BigHit.
If you buy a Surly 1x1 im going to have to get a restraining order.;)

So can we call it "the Specialized squeak" then? Also jcivic, the rep you spoke of needs to be hit by DBD and his stupid stick. A broken weld is a broken weld if it is not structural then what stress did it take to crack? Also being that this crack is at the headtube junction it sounds like the calm before the storm.

no, actually his suggestion made perfect sense. They only use the tack welds to hold the down tube to the head tube in the jig. Since the whole top tube is actually folded over the down tube and the head tube, AND THEN welded, the tack welds are not designed to have any structural integrity. They only hold the down tube to the head tube during the whole assebly process. The "rep" I spoke to was actually one of the techs who had originally designed the bike. BTW it's a P3. The guy explained to me that they stress the frames in a machine to find weaknesses in the manufacturing process, and after 2 days they had to turn the machine off for fear of breaking the machine. He told me that in order to actually break the frame at the head tube would take such an enormous force that it would actually qualify as "abuse" and therefore not be under warranty.

I have never heard a specialized "squeak". If it squeaks then it was either older when they didnt have sealed bearings (if they ever didnt use sealed bearings) or just dribble some oil around the pivots. I havent ever heard a squeak out of mine and I bet I have ridden mine harder than ALOT of other people.

Oh my gosh, Mael is finally going squishy...
I don't want to think about the jumps you're going to be doing now.

I don't go as big as people think. I just ride with people who do. I am kind of hoping the squishy will get me going as big as I want to.

I found the squeek problem on my bike. It was only the spring moving slightly on the stops and the mono cock(sp):) was amplifying the noise. Now my bike makes no noise what so ever.

So Maelstrom, is the BigHit that you bought one of the new style ones (i.e. 24" rear wheel) or the older ones with the "non-FSR" rear pivot?

Mael, congrats on the new bike! Finally moving up to full squishy!
What fork comes on that bike? You gonna get rid of it or upgrade the Kona?
Post pics ASAP!

Bighit Comp...fsr style with 24" rear wheel...I would never go single pivot ;)
I think a dj comes on the bike but I should be putting either a z150 or a super T on it...thats the part I haven't decided. We still have three weeks of open mountain time here so I may try to get up one day :)

Know what sounds even better?
A completely quiet Banshee Scream :) Suspension is silent, and 108 engagement points sound just as cool (only quiet) as a King :)

Chris King is 72 engagement points.
Hadley makes a 108 click hub.
I have the latter of the two. Titanium freehub body, Ti internals, 10mm thru axle, and almost instant engagement. I do want a STEALTH hub though, NO engagement time. I might get one if I kill the Hadley. Or I might calculate everything and see if a Roholoff would be worth it.
Excellent buy mate. I also own an 02 BigHit comp, it's a reaaly nice bike. The DJ1's are actually pretty good but I'm also upgrading.
Good Luck with your bike and it definately soundts like you got it for a steal.

I know chris king has 72 ;)...I was looking at the hadley trials but decided 36 would be enough. I have a bud who just moved here that had a roholff (until both bikes were stolen 4 days after moving here) and he misses it. Best thing around. There is another company looking to make cheap (half the price) internally geared 8 spd hubs in the near future. I will have to try amd find the resource I had on that.
Is the hadley trials quiet?
It's quieter than a King. I love it to death. Plus, I paid less for it than I would have for a King. Now I just need to get a Green front 20mm Hadley hub to complete the package :)

Thats bull****.
Specialized did not tack weld the P3 together.

The problem is I don't own a camera (seriously, I hate pictures) and my bud who has a camera is a lazy arse...I have been trying to get some pic of one of the local trails for ever...I am still trying before the snow hits.
