Training & Nutrition - How much protien do you need to maintain muscles when training?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I've been eating vegan for weight control. I can eat more food and feel full and I've been able to lose some weight too. My protien intake has been 15% of my calories. Is this enough to cover my muscle growth and maintenance? What formula should I use to figure grams of protien?

I consume about 1.5 grams/protein/KG body mass, but that's just maintenance levels for my level of activity.

Good for you! Watch your B12 and iron levels, though. 30,000 Bike Forum readers will give you 30,000 answers, just like trying to cook oatmeal. I say, if your legs aren't sore when you're on the bike, you're getting enough protein. If they are, you're not. It's different for everyone, and for everyone's activity level, and what kind of activity. The more you ride, the more you need, 'cause riding burns it. If you use a 1:7 carbo/protein ratio for your riding food, you will get enough there. If you ride a lot, you may be over Stormcrowe's figure. If less, less. When I'm training hard, I use about 60g/day of whey protein. That may be more than I need, but it's cheap. It's not for you, though.

I think 1000 lbs of beef a week should about do

oh wait, make that 1500 lbs of tofu pups for you

One of the reasons I switched to a vegan diet was to control blood sugar. It seems counter-intuitive. It is working! Do some research on iron levels and insulin resitance and intracellular fat levels and insulin resistance. You might be surprised!

There is some really good information about a vegetarian diet to control blood sugar in many different situations. I don't have that problem, and hope to never have the problem, but I am thinking of a vegetarian diet just because of the information showing you can get plenty of protein from a vegetarian diet alone.

There is a value referenced in the Friel bible but I cannot recall the reference right now. Something about 0.6g/lb or 1g/lb of lean body mass.

you are telling ME to do some research ?

how often do you test your blood for lactate and glucose, per day ?

I do it ten times.

think I know what-does-what to my blood sugar ?

guess what, a fat steak I can
eat all day and not have to touch insulin. I am a type 1 and know what my body is
doing 24x7. I have spent hundreds of hours researching the endocrine system,
and working with 2 top endocrinologists who specialize in 'sports and diabetics'
and 'athletes with endocrine system issues'

I've been stabbed, poked, prodded, tested, phelbotomized a thousand times
before, during, and after endurance testing...

do not get me started

Good for you. I'm obviously in the presence of greatness and am in no way worthy to have an opinion. Is this a picture of you?

I am a type II diabetic.

My A1C was 4.6 on my last draw.

I've met few type I diabetics that take no insulin.

Your body still produces some insulin?

my original post was parody

and if you knew anything at all about type 1's
I meant no bolus needed for steaks, I always
have to use basal to simply stay alive. most type 1's
don't consider -basal- as extra insulin.

also I don't mind the quotes

Not sure of the source of your hostility. Can't say that I've given tons of advice on this board.

Here are a couple of quotes that I'm basing my opinion on:

It is generally accepted that athletes need 1.2g-1.8g per kg per day, whereas 'average' people require about 0.8g per kg per day

as a vegan you also need a decent source of zinc, selenium, iodine, vitamin b12, calcium, vitamin d and essential fatty acids.

see this thread on veganfitness.net (http://www.veganfitness.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13181) for more info and also see veganhealth.org (http://veganhealth.org/) for excellent vegan nutrition info
