Instead of a DJ3, the lbs was able to get a 2004 Z1 dropoff. Not complaining, will post pics later.

You give us pics of a fork and wheel. What about some shots of the fork in action. It is way to clean in that pic:D
Good choice. It is a much better all around fork then the DJ.

In that case, a little morphine, you know.... just to take of the edge?
but seriously,
I feel your pain, take your time, I did mine last October, and honestly, it is still not 100% in certain ways.

this sort of off topic, but what would the advantages/disadvantages be of a 20mm vs. a dropoff fork? i understand a 20mm thru-axle provides more stiffness. i can't seem to produce a good search query either to narrow the possibilities down.

A 20mm will definately stiffen up the fork! I'm a big guy and any fork I tried with a standard QR in anything over 3.5" of travel felt "noodly". I then tried a 5" travel with a 20mm and it felt SOLID.
Problem is finding wheelsets with a 20 mm hub. They're getting more popular, but choices are limited.
I've got a wheelset built up with Mavic D321 rims and they're solid but heavy! Sometimes I wish I had a second set of wheels that were lighter for days I do more XC type riding.

For me the drop off is just right.

that's what i am debating on right now. i have a dj2 coming in with our team order through school but didn't know the z1 had the travel reduction feature, something i feel would help me out in the long run. so i am debating whether i should sell the new dj2 to get a thru-axle z1 or sherman for a little bit more or the 2004 z1 dropoff for about the same price. i would just rather be safe when i need to climb even though i have no idea how much i will be climbing on trails. i see myself doing more urban stuff around campus at school and trails at home.
