Mostly for us old farts, word is that these folks just finished up a record: Charlie Haden, Pat Metheny, Bruce Hornsby, Bela Fleck, Sam Bush, Stuart Duncan, Bryan Sutton, Russ Barenberg, Vince Gill, Ricky Skaggs, The Whites and Jerry Douglas. Should be out early summer.

That's a terrifying bunch of talent. Quite looking forward to it. Are any of you folks fans of these guys?

I am a huge Pat Metheny fan. When I was in my early teens, I played guitar but was interested strictly in heavy metal. I had read about Pat Metheny in the guitar magazines but didn't buy any of his music because I wasn't into jazz. In '79 or so, he had a gig in a small nightclub here in Honolulu, so I decided to go, thinking that even though I wasn't into jazz, maybe I could learn something. My dad, my brother and I showed up at the club, and it turns out that the guy at the door seating people was a former student of my dad, so he put us right at the very front. Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, Mark Egan (bass), Nana Vasconcellos (percussion) played and I was transfixed for the 2 hours they were onstage.

I've purchased just about every album he's released with The Pat Metheny Group since then, and I am very much a jazz fan. My wife's a fan also. The next time he travels with The Pat Metheny Group, my wife and I plan on traveling to wherever we can find good tickets.

Yeah, he is pretty amazing. He came to town a couple of years ago on the "The Way Up" tour. It says something for the guy that almost 30 years after you saw him in Honolulu, he's still making interesting music and seems as enthusiastic about it as he was then.

It's also fun to listen to a 20-year-old album and not feel as though it's dated. Any favorites from among his stuff, Sprocket Man?

Cheers.

I really enjoy "Cross the Heartland" from American Garage, "Jaco" from their debut album, and "Song for Bilbao" from Travels. The entire Letter from Home album holds special memories for me because I listened to the cassette tape (remember those?) over and over while traveling through Europe.

Did you see his concert when he was in town? They sound amazing live.

We did see his show--great stuff! I don't know how he maintains his enthusiasm; it didn't hurt that the crowd was very into it, too.

He played the whole The Way Up album, start to finish. Kind of funny--he said, "Ordinarily at this point in the show, I'd say something like 'That was a tune from our latest recording.' But that was our entire latest recording."

I'd go see him again in a heartbeat.

You'd like Robben Ford too. (if you dont already). Look into Wes Montgomery also. You can hear Montgomery in Metheny's playing.

Metheny is incredible. I love his tone. I try to get that tone with my Les Paul (neck pickup on with tone knob on zero) but i need that ES175.
