After my possible fall (http://www.bikeforums.net/showpost.php?p=5972989&postcount=39) last week, I need to replace my helmet. It doesn't look damaged, but one never knows. My LBS doesn;'t have anything, so it looks like I'm headed to teh tubes. Has anyone had a good experience buying a helmet over the net? It seems a little dicey to me.

Here's what I'm looking for, has anyone used anything like this?

I have a big head (Neil B, keep it to yourself), so tiny helmets are out.
Something that'll be friendly to a blinky and a helmet light (i.e., decent-sized vertical or sorta vertical vents)
Must be available in yellow!
Thanks!

Did your old helmet fit well?

Most manufacturers have similar sizing from mold to mold. Some Giro's fit me in a Large size but in a Bell I take a Medium/Large.

Some places are blowing out their 06 and 07 stock right now like Nashbar and Performance. Good prices and good selecting if you call early.

Now Bell makes a Commuter Helmet called a Bell City:

We got some of these at the Shop in the Yellow and they are BRIGHT! Can't miss these at all! These are one size fits all and are quite adjustable for fit. Might want to look around for one.

Your LBS doesn't have helmets?!?

I suppose I can look locally and bring you a helmet when I drive up on Friday. Just promise me you won't have such a 'possible fall' when we ride Saturday.

Of course they have helmets. Just not the sort I'm looking for. And not in Yellow, that's the important bit. I'm using my current helmet for now, I think it's probably fine but it seems prudent to replace it.

That Bell Citi looks cool...

Black helmets are way cooler, dude. :-) See my avatar.

I drew your avatar! Sorry to break it to you, but it's actually a dark grey, I think 90% or so. :p

Okay, I found a local dealer of the Citi helmet, I'll check it out. Looks like it may have mesh in the front vents, though. I'll find out.

I think your best bet is to find the type/style you want in a shop so you can see it first. I've bought both of my two helmets over net and been satisfied. However, now that I've been riding enough, I know more things to look for and will be more selective next time.

Blinky friendly
Helmet head-mount light friendly
Many vents (seems I need to scratch a lot)
Must have visor (I don't know how people enjoy helmets without them)

I tried on a Bell Citi, and the new ones have a clip for a rear blinky! I ordered one from the Cranford Bike Shop in, of course, retina-searing seizure-inducing yellow. Thanks, everybody!

Great, a helmet in seizure-inducing yellow. That means you are not allowed to look at your helmet before we ride together.

It's okay, I always ride with my eyes closed anyway.

Check out Uvex helmets http://www.uvexsports.com/category.aspx?categoryID=5

I have the Touring and like it much better than any other helmet I have had, including the Citi, Slant and Pnuemo. The chin strap is great, it allows you to make adjustments on the fly, rather than having to fumble around with buckles and such. It also has screens in the front vents...to help keep the bugs out! The Touring cost me 50 bucks.

Kinda pricey, but they look cool, particularly the Urban helmet. I have a pair of Uvex safety specs, and they're pretty durable. They seem to be differentiating their sports equipment (goggles, glasses, etc) from the lab and safety glasses more than they used to.

I'm getting a Nutcase helmet (http://www.nutcasehelmets.com/multisport.html) this spring. I like the pink and black checkerboard "Punky" style! So rad!
