Ever do something right by pure dumb luck?
When I installed a new front derailleur cable, I had a devil of a time adjusting the derailleur. I could not get it to shift to the smallest ring on a triple. When I got that right, it was difficult to get it on the largest ring. I played with it, took the cable off, readjusted, swore at it, and almost threw my hex key.
All in all, I spend about 90 minutes futzing around with the darn thing and never got it to work right. I left it so that I had the middle and largest rings working. I was so frustrated I didn't even test ride it.
The next day I was out, I got to a huge hill and automatically shifted for the smallest ring, and wonder of wonders, it shifted perfectly! At the top of the hill, I shifted to the next ring with no problems, then to the biggest.
It has been working perfectly since! I guess dumb luck is as good as skill sometimes.
