Was wondering if anybody road this trail.

What sort of condition is it in, is it all smooth and paved?

Does the trail cross any roads?

How do I get there?

Here's two links that should answer your questions.
The trail is in very good condition, one section is a short stretch of dirt road, and it does cross roads.

The HVRT is one of the rail trails that you can get to by train via Metro North from Wassaic, if you are car-free. Pretty area and there's a good ice cream place in Millerton right off the trail that is yummy! :)

It is a nice paved rail trail. Easy, and great for the kids. Parking never seems to be a problem as there are several spots you can use. Yes it does cross some roads, but they are just that.. roads and not "major" highways. It is well marked and designed. A very small hamlet is close by with a bike shop. If you want to extend your ride you can loop the trail by way of the local roads which is a nice ride.

Is that hamlet with the bike shop right at the downtown crossing in Millerton? I think I tried to stop there once but they seemed closed. The shop seemed to be in a basement of a 2 story house. I could look in the windows and it looked like a small bike shop but nobody was home.

A friend and I actually used the bike path to get home when we were biking from Great Barrington, MA back to NJ. after Amenia we picked up Rt 44/55 to get back towards Poughkeepsie and the Mid-Hudson bridge, although we took a slight detour to stop by Hyde Park to check out FDR's place and the Vanderbilt Manor.

There's also a ride organized by Bike NY.
(I think it's the same area)
I did it last summer and it's now one of my favorites.
Lots of rolling hills and beautiful scenery.

A bike shop is located just west of the rail trail in the hamlet of Amenia. This is in the section 1 or lower section of the trail map located on their website.

If you ride up (north) to Millerton the village is bigger. I'm not really familiar with a bike shop there.

The Harlem Valley Rail Trail Century was a great ride. I'd definitely check that out again. Amazing scenery, great, well-marked route, 2 tough climbs. It's worth the trip.
