i'm pretty new to road cycling. in fact, i just finished wearing through my
first set of tires. to replace my continental 3000s, i purchased some
michelin megamiums (700x23). in my first attempt to put the new tires
on my wheels, i found it _extremely_ difficult. i never had this sort of problem
with my conti's. is this fairly normal for new tires?? any tips to break-in the
new rubber and to ease them onto the wheels??

do you have a set of tire levers?
i use these (set of three hardened plastic) with my new tires and they go right on.

i have tire levers, but the fit is so tight that my plastic
levers aren't quite strong enough. i broke one lever is
an failed attempt at getting the last bit of the lire on the
wheel.

success! perhaps, i just needed to rest a bit. the new michelin
tires are sitting pretty on my wheels. now i just need to get out
and put some miles on 'em. my other tire levers held up to the strain
this time.

it should be a pain in the ass, but not that hard, were you pulling the entire tire over the rim or one side and then the other
