Anyone know if 9 speed Shimano indexed barends will work with an 8 cog cassette, in indexed mode?

I run an 8 speed indexed on a 7 rear cluster and it works ok. Set it up so it indexes the best on the side of the cluster you use most. Then you may have to feathere it a little on shifting on the other side of the cluster when shifting. It's also best to set it up so the "extra click" is on the "cable out" side of the shift. You don't want to be pulling the cable with a dead click on that end of your shift.

Shimano used to sell a little shim to covert different speed bar-ends to the next step up or down (I don't remember which now). It was a little plastic piece that went into the cable track on the shifter. I don't know if any such beasty still exists.

It's a $35 solution to a $30 problem, though, as 9sp cassettes aren't that expensive.
