Foo - What tha hey!?

A tiny, tiny bit of snow here in Gastonia and the freaking world is coming to an end. Now I have to use a vacation day to stay home with my kids because the school system is a joke.

The roads are wet - WET! Not icy, yet they have put our county in lock-down like there's a bomb threat.

We got very light snow last night and school closings were on TV by 8PM. It changed to rain by 10PM and has rained all night. The snow is now gone and the streets are wet. Same kinda wet we get during a summer rain. :rolleyes:

They always do that here, too. Very rarely does snow and ice actually stick to the streets here, but schools close at the first mention of snow. Of course if I was a kid I'd be thrilled. :D

And this surprises you because......:rolleyes: In the 11 years that I have lived here, I have become accustomed to to how people react in this kind of weather. I have to laugh about it now.

Of course it's the parents that have to worry about what to do with the kids.... stay home from work? Find babysitting?

If all businesses had to run on the same schedule as the schools, ie school's closed for whatever reason then so is everything else, you can bet that there would be some changes being made pretty quick.

Around here the teachers in addition to the 2 weeks for christmas, 9 weeks for summer and one week in March also get about 1 extra day every month to "develop" themselves. These are of course in addition to the snow days.

If I'm expected to be at work that day (and I always am) the teachers should be too. They should also "develop" themselves during the eight weeks or more they get for vacation.

So funny...back home where I grew up in Upstate New York, if a **** ton of snow fell, they MIGHT cancel the outer limits bus routes in the country (where I lived). But not school. Those were the best days because we got to drive the snowmobiles into school and park on the football field :p

No surprise here. I expected it. But, it frosts my hide because I'm taking vacation to do housework.

Wait... I've got kids, right? They do the housework while I Foo all day. Fair trade dontcha think?

Ours was the same way.

We'd wake up in the morning, 8" on the ground and still coming down. The radio would be on the AM station that also carried the daily farm report and the 'buy-trade-sell' show (craigslist before ther interwebs), we'd wait for our school name to be called... No school number, that didn't happen till my younger brother was in HS.

We'd stand, waiting for the bus for two hours, then someone's mom would come out and tell us they called school. This usually resulted in a snowball battle, frostbite and steaming hot chocolate ant the end of it all. :)

Our schools close at the first threat of snow as well. I think that they have so few snow days that it falls under the use it or lose it catagory. My kids do not know what snow days are though, and most likely never will. We Homeschool. It's just inspiration to get their school work done faster so they can go play.

In places that do not receive much snow, ie Texas, the natives have no idea how to drive in show and the municipalities do not have the equipment needed to sand/salt/plow roads. Add to that the fact that we usually get ice instead of snow and you can see why the schools close. Enjoy the snow day and have fun with the kids, while the rest of us play on foo.

Yes they don't last too long and it is easy to reschedule. I really think there is something going on between the Principal and Teacher.:D

It's the opposite here in MN. We can get 10 feet of snow and people think they can still drive above the speed limit, crash, and then have the nerve to complain that people don't know how to drive in snow.

There are times here when it is 12 below (actual temp) and maybe some things should close...

When we lived in Cincy, I thought it was hilarious how we got a dusting and they closed the whole metropolitan area down. And I thought they called themselves the "midwest," too. Ha!

Here in Austin, if it sleets even slightly, people will crash on overpasses, and be absolutely surprised about the concept that bridges ice up first.

If the roads get any ice at all, the city pretty much shuts down, and even then, there will be 20-100 fender benders as people drive without understanding the concept of 85mph + ice + vehicle = vehicle on guard-rail.

Ooooo... It's snowing now in NE PA. One of those real fine flake snows. The kind that could snow someone in on a Friday. :)

I swear nmy BP would be 20 points lower diastolic & systolic if I didn't have to drive.

The concept that a 4000 lb. 4 wheel drive vehichle cannot stop on ice is very hard to understand apparently. I stay home if it ices just to be away from overconfident ass hats.

The other funny thing in the south when a little snow or ice storm hits is watching everyone run and empty the shelves at the grocery and discount stores like they are going to be stuck for months.

Mine actually is 20 points lower since I stopped driving. :D I was taking a blood pressure medication and no longer need it thanks to biking. :)
