This 'ish is pretty cool (http://people.csail.mit.edu/torralba/tinyimages/)if you are into web 2.0/3.0, math, words, or pretty pretty pictures. Screw words!

"We present a visualization of all the nouns in the English language arranged by semantic meaning. Each of the tiles in the mosaic is an arithmetic average of images relating to one of 53,463 nouns. The images for each word were obtained using Google's Image Search and other engines.

A total of 7,527,697 images were used, each tile being the average of 140 images. The average reveals the dominant visual characteristics of each word. For some, the average turns out to be a recognizable image; for others the average is a colored blob. The list of nouns was obtained from Wordnet, a database compiled by lexicographers which records the semantic relationship between words. Using this database, we extract a tree-structured semantic hierarchy which we use to arrange tiles within the poster. We tessellate the poster using the hierarchy so that the proximity of two tiles is given by their semantic distance. Thus the poster explores the relationship between visual and semantic similarity.

For a large part of our language the two are closely correlated as shown by the extent of visual clustering within the poster. The large-scale groupings correspond to broad categories such as plants or people. Within the plant cluster, for example, tighter semantic groupings are visible such as flowers or trees. In turn each of these clusters contains further groupings all the way down to individual, highly specific nouns. The averaging within each tile removes the variation between images of a given word, enhancing the similarly between neighbors. By clicking on top of the map, you will see the word corresponding to that location, the average image and the first 16 images returned by the image search online tools."

Wait, what?

lol...that's what I said at first, too. basically, some dudes and dudettes wrote some really crazy math to organize pictures of "nouns" (plants(pot!), animals, etc) that are found online spacially to create that giant "picture" the link takes you to. Each "picture" is a tile made up of a bunch of other pictures.

It's not really "useful" for anything per se, but I had fun clicking on the tiles and seeing how one noun related to another noun, spacially. Because I'm weird. I'm going to go hang out by myself now :p

Words & spacial relationships? It boggles my my insignificant mind. Furniture, food on a plate, advertising designs and houses yes.

'Splain please. :o

The parrot said no, not surprising considering the teasing he gets since you taught him to say "Polly wants a nomial." I am using the peg leg to prop open my eyelids. Would you care to borrow my gallows instead?

the math/algorithms that they use pretty much go over my head. the way it makes sense to me: each picture of a "noun" fits into the math algorithm in a certain way, and when you group them all together via that bloody math, that large picture is what you get.

or..."ooooo, pictures....droooool...." :p

jsharr, I will take the gallows, but can you at least thrown in a wench or two?

Hey Wench is a noun...there should be a pic of one in there somewhere....does it have an index?

I'm even more confused!

Math + words + pixters? WTF? Where can I buy that acid?

What's the text box thingy for? I've keyed in words and hit ENTER and it does nothing... Not even laugh.

OHHHH I see your confusion now.

That text box doesn't seem to be working now at the moment. When you clicked on a picture from the BIG picture, that box used to display the "noun" associated with that part of the picture. It isn't working at the moment :(

Sadly, there is no search function. This bad boy isn't really useful for much more than looking and thinking "gee, that was probably a waste of manpower and time"

I was just about to have the wenches deliver the gallows, until I read that the dictionary is bustulated. That is what happens when you add math to stuff. Nothing good will ever come of math.

Here, please accept this box of rabid weasels.

I find it interesting that "Velveeta" is next to "Pain Pill." Why is "Spam" not even in the vicinity of "Velveeta"?
