Thanks. Good article. I am especially interested in the fact that it is dry air of winter that provokes asthma and not the cold weather. I was beginning to suspect as much, from personal experience.

There are several on this forum that think the cold triggers their asthma, that is interesting reading.

"cold can be frightening"

I just skimmed the article, but there's nothing new there. I've been exercising in the cold for 40 years. It's not scary and it won't hurt you if you've taken some precautions.

BTW - cool damp air seems to trigger my asthma more than cold air.

Section on cold-induced asthma is interesting. I have had one bout of this riding in about 15F with brisk wind and probably not wearing a scarf or other extra face protection (besides a thin balaclava). I find the scarf acts as a good buffer and a face mask works even better.

But if this article is right, a good solution might be to ride slower and breath a bit more regularly.

Of course there is nothing new to those of us that ride in the cold, but remember that 99% of the population doesn't and they perceive it as dangerous. That is what makes articles like these valuable.
