Today I rode my bike on a 32.1 mile route (mostly flat and not too much wind either way today) and did it in 96 minutes. So today's average was a hair above 20MPH.

I didn't feel like I was riding all that hard either.

This is cool for me since I am a new roadie and started out doing pretty close to 15MPH average.

I don't use a computer on my bike since I don't like the overall mindset it puts me in, but now and then I will time a known milage just to see where I am at. I was a little suprised today when I saw I broke the big 2-0 barrier! :)

I have no idea how fast this is in the overall scheme of things but it sure feels good for a 35 year old pudgy newbie.

Thanks to the forum for all the support and encouragement!

cAPS - great job and keep up the good work!!!

I have used a computer on my bike for quite awhile up until about a month ago. I took it off and felt like I was riding harder than before. I guess the clock was limiting me in one way or another. Again, congrats on the milestone!

Thanks!

Yes... I think something about the computer can be as detrimental as it can be good.

Well done :) I did my first 30 miles today also but it took me 2h 20mins. I had an average of 14.4 miles per hour. There were a lot of hills (some felt vertical :D ) so I'm kinda proud of that.
Well done again, I hope to be up there with you soon (yeah right :) )

Congrats, I made it into the 20's for the first time this weekend so I know how you feel. I must admit though I couldn't have done it without the computer - I had it set to show MPH and average and if either started to slip while I was on a flat stretch I knew I had to suck it up and push harder!!

Congrats again,

Peter

I find the computer useful for keeping an eye on RPM even moreso than MPH. I check my avg at the end of the ride, but I use the computer during the ride to monitor RPM.

Put a computer on to log your miles and other information more accurately, and put a piece of tape over the display so you don't see it. Otherwise, you're doing yourself a dis-service.

I am not entirely anti computer. I have one on my MTB (which is why I know the distance of this particular route to the tenth of a mile.

When I bought the road bike I just didn't get around to installing a computer and the lack of it has been so interesting in the way it has impacted my general mindset while I ride that I just haven't seen the need to change.

I do wonder sometimes if a ride is fast or slow... and I have suprised (annoyed?) fellow roadies on two occasions by asking what our current speed was so I could have an idea. :)

In my non biking life... I also do not wear a watch.

Hrmmm.. :)
