It is loose. The rear brake is set up for the free side of the hub. It doesn't line up on the fixed side so I leave it open and just run one brake when on the fixed side.

It looks like I'm going to be cutting down on my posing sessions in the upcoming months and riding more instead as Starbucks plan on closing down several hundred locations. :(

There is life after Starbucks. What about that CHANGO place you said you were going to pose at? Get busy!

- date : Thursday, July 17th
- time : 5:45
- location: Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, La Jolla
- beverage : Double Cappucino
- duration: 20 minutes
- description – A hookie pose. I decided to flee my Kafkaesque office early to regain some mental balance by riding my bike. I took a spin over to visit my parents for a bit then headed to Bird Rock via Pacific Beach. It turns out that they were holding a "Taste of Birdrock" street fair and La Jolla Blvd was closed to cars for several blocks. I stopped in at the local coffee shop to take in the scene and pose. After finishing the cappucino (too much froth), I stopped by VeloCulture in another futile attempt to find period correct parts for my steelie. This time I resolved to not go back. The shop has evolved into a fixie-only place to the point that they really don't like people showing up in lycra. They had a sign announcing their monthly night ride scheduled for tomorrow night. I had been meaning to go for a while, so I asked -

Me: "So, what's the deal with your ride tomorrow?"
Shop Guy: "Um, it's for track bikes"
Me: "Oh."
Shop Guy: "It's an urban ride, um, for track bikes."
Me: "Oh, OK"
Shop Guy: "Do you own one?"
Me: "No, just geared"
Shop Guy: <silence>

So I left. So much for being a cool place.

- beverage : Double Cappucino
- duration: 20 minutes
- description: A clown pose. I took a ride out to the Cabrillo National Monument this AM. I didn't go in of course because it costs too much and I needed to spend the money on caffeine. The was the last opportunity to pose in August but I wasn't sure at the start of the ride where I would go. My decision was made easy when I saw that a new Peet's just opened on Catalina Blvd a few blocks East of the entrance to the Navy base. It was very crowded and offered excellent posing potential. The perfect opportunity to show off my Evil Clown jersey. As I entered Peet's I felt like Moses as the crowd parted silently like the Red Sea. They were left speechless, which I believe explains why no one spoke to me. As I drank my double cap at an outside table the throngs came and went, including a young family with a toddler who looked at my jersey intently, but to my mild disappointment did not cry.

Well, they opened a brand new coffee shop in roadfix's honor, just half a mile from where he lives. He decided to take his Surly Long Haul Trucker there as the area is very hilly and also to explore his neighborhood. They also opened up a new bike shop called Echo Cycles just down the street from FIX. This neighborhood is definitely happening for those of you who are familiar with Echo Park.......lot's of new art galleries, coffee shops, vintage shops, restaurants, and many old homes being renovated by new residents moving into the area. Roadfix's hood is definitely eclectic.
FIX is located in the most unlikely area anyone would expect most any business to open. Check it out when you ride out here and look for roadfix.

(No, that's not a dork disc. It's a 34T cog)

- beverage : Double Cappucino
- duration: 30 minutes
- description: After climbing Mt Soledad I rewarded myself with a dose of caffeine at the Living Room. It's been there for a long time but I've never gone in before. It's name comes from having comfy living room furniture inside, but I wasn't willing to leave my bike unattended so I sat in the patio. Lot's of pedestrian traffic on a Sunday morning, so the posing quotient was favorable. There were a few other cyclists hanging around as well, from road bikers to cruisers w/baskets types. My only criticism is that service was fairly slow the cappucino was just OK. Ultimately such things are unimportant compared to the pose.

I wasn't wearing an interesting jersey so I compensated with this creepy smile.

I went to get a preview of Cafe Calabria. Out in front I saw a few bikes. One brakeless fixed gear with bullhorns, one old road bike with downtube shifters, and a couple of others. People sitting outside were reading and working on stuff. There was also at least one dog. Coffee was good, but I prefer the San Diego Coffee coffee.

A single speed pose. A spare frame and parts, boredom, and a touch of lemming instinct drove me to build up my old Trek 2120 as a single speed. The fact that everything about it is wrong with respect to hipster style points gives me some comfort - it is not steel, it has a chain tensioner, it has brakes, etc, etc - but I still feel a bit silly about the whole thing. Nevertheless I set out today on my first real ride on the new contraption with an open mind. Going with the theme, I wore regular shorts, a t-shirt and no gloves, but I had to wear a helmet. At the Pannakin I tried to further the theme by displaying the devil horn hand thingy to anyone who would look, but after seeing the photo I realize I got the fingers wrong. As for the ride itself, I am reminded why bibs and gloves are such good things. My fingers were twitchy and bored from the lack of shifting, my legs were appalled at spinning out on the flats and my left knee was offended at mashing up Torrey Pines in an unwelcome gear. Still it was not that bad. There was no Zen epiphany about the stripped down simplicity of man, bike and road, but it may grow on me. Or not.

Indolent58,
Please be advised that the "Zen thing" doesn't happen on a single speed, it happens on fixed gear.

Which, really, is also a single speed, but because it's a fixed gear it's really so much more (Zen like, that is). As follows is a pose in my bikeforums.net Fifty Plus kit. Yes, with my fixed gear bike.

Coffee is in my Polar bottle, but it's mixed with Chocolate Soy Milk and SPIZ, so it's not really Zen like coffee (which doesn't really exist anyway, so no loss).

I was beat from the past two days of riding, so I decided to take it easy, tool around town, and do some reading and writing. I put my laptop and a book in my messenger bag, got dressed in regular clothes, and rode my Cannondale into Poway. I decided to go to Poway because I live 1 mile from Poway, but I never go there. Stopped at "It's a Grind." Early Sunday morning means low traffic at the shop. Sat outside, as I always try to , drank my coffee, read my book, and did a little work (or pretended to) with my wool cycling cap on.

I need some Emo glasses.

Description:
I took the day off and decided to explore the trail system that runs around the neighborhoods near my house. I found some really neat stuff, a lot of singletrack, and was able to link up to Miramar Lake. Near the end of my ride, I stopped off at the Starbucks for a mountain bike pose.

Working stiffs were on their lunch break, stopping through for midday caffeine hit. Others were having a leisurely cup of coffee with a friend. There was a lady with a dog on a leash, who soon learned that her other, much older dog had followed her to the shop.

Though my helmet did have a visor, I was wearing spandex and not mountain bike baggies. I may lose poser points for that, but I was showing off my new $39 Thomson seatpost. That counts for something, right?
