View Full Version : What is your favorite group ride in Dallas?
There a bunches of organized rides in the metroplex, and lots of great people to ride with. Which is your favorite?
I am personally partial to the Saturday 9:10 at RBM Coit. The ride is fast paced with lots of surges and a real sprint at the end. It is sorta race simulation and lots of good old fashioned fun. :D

My personal favorites are the PBA rides. During the summer, I really enjoy the Popsicle rides out of Custer and Renner. Last year I rode with the B group, but I hope to ride with the A group this year.

Mirage 9:00 out of RBM Dallas. Everytime I think I'm hot **** on the bike I'll go there and get brought back down to earth.

Seconded. The right pace and distance for me during the majority of the riding season.

Any PBA ride - which for me have mostly been the Distance Builder 1 and Sunday Tempo rides, but I'm looking forward to moving up to some of the faster rides come spring. I may try some of the other rides now and again if I'm feeling good, but I'm thinking I'll wait for the 8:00 ride to start back up and use that as my move-up ride.
I'm ready to dropped off the back of the group again and feel that uncertainness I used to get when I first started doing group rides - nothing like seeing the group head over the horizon and realize you have no earthly idea where you are at that moment :D - but then seeing everyone pulled up at the next stop-sign waiting for you to drag yourself back on to the group. Good times.

There really isn't much difference between the AVS on the A and B rides maybe 1 MPH, but the A ride has more surges. A great way to improve your anaerobic threshold.

I am going to try the 9:00 at RBM Coit. Mike Gacki said they average about 22 MPH over 50 miles
I feel a strong dose of humility will be coming my way.

Cool. It'll probably do for me what the B group did at the beginning of the season. I used to have a hard time hanging with them, but by the end I was usually riding towards the front and contested a couple sprints on Renner.
The DORBA FNR, a no drop night ride around WWCL on mt bikes with beer and burgers afterwards.
Did I hear beer? I might just have to check that ride out...

I made it about 40 miles last time...that avg is meaningless since it's the 28-30mph surges that'll wear you down
I ride both the Sat rides at RBM-North and the South rides which is my favorite. A few lead out sprints which will either boost your ego or crush your soul. The south ride has a couple of small hills that make it a little more fun as well.

the worst hills I've ever seen are on the sunday 2 p.m. (OAS I think?) out of legacy & independence; 30 rpms in my lowest gear :(

My favorite is the PBA Saturday OAS Lite ride. Great camaraderie, paceline work, and most importantly, you will never get left out to fend for yourself. It's not break-neck speeds but will certainly give you a great workout (averages 18-20MPH over 50-70 miles). Good ol' fashioned fun!!!

nooby question. What does OAS stand for?
Used to be 'Old And Slow'.
Now they might as well call it the Jeff Wheeler Show.

Ah, based on the average speeds posted I never would have put that together.

+1 - I've heard that story as well, although I think more people go with the "old and slow" explanation.
Either way - I'm working towards OAS Lite for my spring Saturday rides. I may get "convinced/guilted" to try it before then if Mike Emmons griefs me into trying it before then.
I definitely need some pace-line skills though - I failed to back off when I hit the front on Sunday :( and was reminded to back off a bit once you hit the front.

Keep working on it. A well tuned paceline is a thing of beauty! Just keep in mind that after you pull through, DO NOT make the recovery line chase you. Your speed should decrease by a hair.
Last good pace line I was in was at the PBA labor day ride, that was a ton of fun. Dang was I tapped out by the end of that ride.

Yep - that was exactly my problem. I think Mike Emmons suggested I go up one bigger gear in the back ring and keep about the same cadence so my speed backs off just a touch but we hit a light before I rotated back through so didn't get to try that.

Is there a Sunday version of that ride going on now? If so what time?

That is in my backyard. Ought to try my Fruit Loop with me, or even better yet on a fixed. Up Rollins hill on a fixed after 30 miles...all kinds of fun. :D

On Sundays, the M&M ride would be the closest ride resembling the OAS Lite ride. I think it departs at 8:00AM during the winter months.

I think 8:00AM is the normal time, but the start times have been all over the place lately (to let it warm up some, etc), so best bet is to check the PBA site before you head out on Sunday.

Sure, next time I'm in the mood for a six-hour sunday (usually every other one, but not this one)

Or at least that's the rule for now. Subject to change at General George's discretion.

2 questions:
- this PBA Popsicle ride - is it weeknights and they roll East down Collins? Think I've seen that one. Will check it out.
- this steep hill - Rollins? where is it? always looking for good hills around here. In return I'll trade you a few I know of.
thx

We call it Rollins Hill, but it is really a steep road called Rollins Rd. It is in Allen, and you can turn
West from Alma onto it, a little bit North of Hedgcoxe. It isn't that bad on its own. Everyone gets
fussy about it because usually the groups have ridden at least 30 miles before it.

The Popsicle ride is on hold for the winter months until the spring daylight savings time change - then it's Tue/Thurs. There's a popsicle-ride anticipation thread running currently at the PBA site
ETA: and as for Rollins - like Ryan mentioned, it's not a terrible hill, it's just the timing of it (end of a long day) and the fact that it does a left hook part way up so you think you're done and you're sitting in the middle of the hill still. Again though, this is Dallas we're talking about, so "hill" is really a relative term.

Ok thanks... yeah it doesn't look so tough from checking the topo. I was thinking more along the lines of Trash Dump or Loving.

Loving:

In Richardson, there's Canyon Creek, lots of little legbreakers in this neighborhood but here's my favorite:

- that one's good for hill repeats, just keep making right turns.
And you surely know the ones near the Fairview fruit stand.

Oh forgot, the Lavon dam loop has a few nice rollers, good for a fast group to hammer. And coming back in there's a couple of heartbreakers

Here is the link to my "Fruit Loop" it includes the hills around the fruit stand, Rollins hill, and the hills on Exchange all in 30 miles.

Rollins is tough not because of the pure elevation gain but because the early slope is more gradual scrubbing off all of your speed then it kicks up when you are grinding away at 12 MPH.

Wishing I lived closer to Plano...my alarm didn't go off so I did the OAS ride at 1 p.m. Way friendlier crowd than Mirage and a decent pace even if I did get stretched thin over 60 miles on a modest breakfast. The route is amazing but I was probably just happy to get out of Dallas.
I need to get my own group ride started, with a pace between the A and B rides of Mirage and an afternoon start so I don't have to turn in before midnight.

Nuts. I'd hoped for more relaxation time in my week, but I'm hooked... Finally rode a popsicle last night without getting thunderstormed, hailed, or stuck in traffic... That was awesome!!! May very well become my new favorite ride. I'm also a big fan of OAS Lite on Saturday and M&M or Sam's 8:30 RBM ride on Sunday.
Hey Tailchaser I was there too. That was a super fun ride. The weather was perfect and everyone was really eager to get out for the first Pop of the season. Next time I will look for you.
I'll agree with some that the RBM rides are pretty good on Saturday, although I tend to feel like the pack is comprised of a bunch of cats. I suppose there are a lot of triathletes in the pack, and most of them don't know how to draft so you have to fight for a wheel.
Best rides for me are Monday and Wednesday in Irving/Las Colinas. We just finished the endless loops at Exxon/Mobil and are starting up with being on what I believe is refered to as the Airport Loop, or some such thing. The pace is fast, pack is comprised of local teams and company is good.
For recovery I prefer Sunday with Mad Duck. Everyone actually understands how to paceline (two neat lines at all times!) the pace can be brisk, the hills are fun and everyone enjoys themselves. Not everything has to be a simulated race, although those are quite fun!

We destroy the streets of Denton every Tuesday night at 9pm. We roll converted-road-fixies, cruisers, Wal-Mart MTBs, hybrids, thrift-store 80s 10-speeds, old 3-speeds, downhills, singlespeeds, and the occasional proper track bike or Campy'd out De Bernardi roadie shows up too. All experience levels. Like critical mass, but better, since its every single week and the group seems to be approaching about 40 riders.
