Hope they remember to lube their chains and hub/BB bearings. Probably won't hurt to squirt the cables and RD, either.

Not the smartest cops I have ever seen. I guess a canoe or boat with a trolling motor would have been to difficult.

Anyway, yeah- that looks stupid. There's no way in hell I'd ever ride my bike in that kind of water. Wouldn't it be faster and easier at that point to either walk or swim? :rolleyes:

i remember last winter, we had a blizzard with like 2 1/2 feet of snow over the course of like 10 hours. so at like 6am, my freind was driving me back to my house to i can shovel the snow because im obviously not going to let my mom do it. as we were trying our hardest to get through the snow and constantly having to get out and like push the car or what not, i saw this guy on a bike trying to get by. i cant imagine what he was thinking. he was going on snow that was already slighly crushed by cars, but most streets were basically closed off to cars because of snow. what the hell was that guy thinking

Well, sometimes you do what you gotta do. I take it some of you have never had to do rocky stream crossings while mountain biking? Sure the water can play havoc on your bearings but that's why you remember to relube. I end up doing almost a complete tear-down and relube after such rides. We get it pretty wet and muddy up here in the PNW during the winters and sometimes you end up slogging through stuff that's just as deep as in the above picture but it's slushy mud instead of water.

I grew up in the midwest (Chicago area). I rode my bikes during the winters. That's how I got to school and back. Riding in snow and ice takes some getting used to but it's quite doable. It was actually a lot of fun. I remember my brother and I going for a midnight ride once on Christmas Eve with some friends. It had been snowing for three days straight at that point and was still snowing. We met up at a local park to talk about what we got in terms of gifts and share our holiday experiences that day.
I also used to ride my bike the several miles from my apt. to campus all the time when I was living in Grand Forks, ND and we got lots of snow there... plus temperatures that would hover in the double-digit subzero range weeks on end sometimes. I made a special set of tyres with screws in them for added traction.

I can't imagine that bearings were meant to be fully submurged in flood water like that. It's gonna leave a mark.

Bicycles to cops are tools, just like the gun, duty belt, and cuffs. I don't they are at all concerned about saving tax dollars by keeping their bike dry or waiting for a jon boat.
It does not look like they are on a rec ride. Perhaps they are trying to help people?
